40-75 years ago our parents wished to raise the next generation free from the global wars of their generation. They made use of the GI Bill, strong unions and a die hard savings credo that built the middle class. Then our generation fought to undo a lot of that, only to morph American society into that of the materialistic. We were enthralled with the sanitized gleam of plastic and the seemingly limitless cache of resources. We raised our fists, joined protests, shouted down "the man", all in the guise of lip service. The Clean Air and Water Acts in the 70's saved us from ourselves, for the time being. Then we started living for ever more material gain, abandoned the disciplined ways of our parents and let the corporations slowly position themselves invincible, all while we were too busy making a killing to want to see the consequences. We've let greed run amuck because we were repeaping small riches from it. Now we again shake our heads at what the world we made has become.
Susan, you can write on most any subject and shine, always making we the reader think and ponder the subject and thoughts you have presented. Granted 1956, 1966. 1976 and1996 had their plusses, but so does 2014. Yes, the government controls our actions, wages, insurances and lives, but watching TV and seeing life in the 3rd world countries, watching people fight armies with rocks and sticks makes me say I'd sooner be in America. Regarding the senators and representatives-they promise us the world to be elected, but being involved with local government finds it's the same. You can try to promise everything, but in reality, you have little control on spending and benefits given to residents. I personally know both of our state's senators and they are genuinely nice people, pressured, persuaded and prodded to please everyone-not really sure their salaries are worth the stress and headaches involved with the job. You writing was well thought of and has me wanting to advise Netflix I need to see Network> Look forward to the sequel of this :) jaybird
