"Thank you for a wonderful night," I said as I offered her my arm and upon her accepting it I led her around the side of the house to the side gate. I stopped, kissed her gently and said, "Goodnight."
The look on her face changed at least a half dozen times. What had shown was excitement, confusion, anger, disappointment, and finally resignation and acceptance that the date was at an end. She sighed, shook her head and said, "Goodnight." She opened the gate and as she reached her door and took the handle in hand she looked to me, smiled, laughed and then went inside.
As I walked to the house crossing poolside, I felt relief, and a great yearning rise within. Once the door was closed I sat in the darkness of the room and wondered who was schooling who and just when had this all moved beyond a game?
