Robert hid his relief at learning that she had no intentions of hiring workmen, and his equal relief at being spared a detailed description of the fine work the slaves had been doing. He gave his wife a peck on the cheek, and forced himself not to hurry as he went down to meet Jasper and head for Atlanta, feeling tremendously pleased with himself.
