"Thank you," Karie said to Jack.
At the same time, Jack said to Karie, "Sorry."
Karie thought it was pretty obvious neither of them knew what to say. There were other students in the hallway. They hadn't heard Mr. Adams sobbing yet, and they weren't looking at Karie or Jack, but they would be soon if Karie didn't start moving. She went down the hallway in one direction, towards the school's exit. She looked over her shoulder see Jack headed the other way, towards the gym. He was looking over his shoulder also, looking at her.

Looking forward to where this goes.

The story/plot feels somewhat contrived and didn't yet create much excitement. But perhaps it's going somewhere?
