Revenge of the Nerd

AN: I couldn't rightfully post the rest of my stories without throwing in this little nugget too. I love this as much as I loved writing ...But Your Enemies Closer. Maybe more. I still think it would be fun to turn this – my favorite couple – into a Halloween tradition – my favorite holiday. Guess we'll see how things go!

Now...Happy Reading!

Emily was swamped. It didn't matter how much she did, the mountain of tasks scheduled throughout the day never seemed to decrease. Every time one thing was finished, it felt like three more popped up out of nowhere. She had no idea how to get on top of it all in order to finish it before the day's end.

She sighed and ran a frustrated hand through her short blonde locks. This always seemed to happen on days that she had plans outside of the office. It was almost as if her career knew that she was trying to have a real life and it refused to allow Emily to have a proper shot at it.

There was a time when this would have been completely fine in Emily's book, but things had changed since those days. Instead of the desires she used to have about putting in long hours in order to impress the senior execs here at Zendex, she wanted nothing more than to put a cap on this day and make it back home to her gorgeous girlfriend, Rebecca. Or in the particular case of today, make it back home to get ready for the Stantons' annual Halloween party.

Rebecca and Emily had come up with a bit of a non-traditional couples costume for this years party and while they had planned the idea together – kinda – neither knew just what the other was going to wear. Admittedly it was Emily that had come up with the idea initially when Rebecca had been hired on as Branson High's new cheer coach a few months back, but it was Rebecca that had suggested it for the costume party and Emily couldn't agree with the notion fast enough: cheerleader and nerd. Specifically the two were planning on costumes that captured the personas of their younger selves – a far cry to the adults they had become today. Thank God for that.

Emily looked at the clock behind her and sighed again. She was going to need at least an hour to fit in a shower and a costume change before she could even make her way over to the Stantons'. With the way things were going today she was bound to show up much later than she would have wanted to. There were times like now where she really hated the responsibilities laid on her shoulders.

If it were up to her at all, Emily would have already skipped out of the office in order to have more time to prepare for tonight. Funny how a silly costume party was more important than the career that was once all consuming to her. Time really can change a person. Or perhaps it has less to do with time and more to do with love, Emily thought with a silly grin stretching across her face.

Thoughts of Rebecca – while pleasant – were bound to slow down her already slackening pace though, so she pushed the brunette from her mind and faced her PC once more with a determined scowl. Just a few more hours and she would be free. All Emily had to do was buckle down and she would be free to let her mind wander all over Rebecca Knox for as long as she wanted. And while she was wandering all over Rebecca, perhaps her hands could come along – and her tongue too.

Dammit Frazier! Head in the game! Focus!

Emily growled in frustration with herself and buried her head in her hands. For the life of her she couldn't figure out why she couldn't stay on track. It wasn't like she didn't see Rebecca every day, so why was this particular instance throwing her off so much?

Perhaps you're anticipating seeing that purple miniskirt on her again. It has been a long while since you last saw her wear it. And this time you won't have to just imagine peeling it off of her, you can actually do it.

Oh God. That was it, wasn't it? Thinking of Rebecca wearing that fucking cheerleaders outfit was what had Emily twisted up into knots. Damn Rebecca and her genius costume suggestion! If she would have just left it as a surprise Emily would have been just fine right now.

If Emily thought that she was dealing with the worst distractions from the cruel tendencies of her overactive imagination, she had another thing coming when her cell rang. It wasn't a surprise who would be on the other end of that line and with the current thoughts that she was entertaining, Emily actually considered not picking up the call at all. She chewed on her lip and watched the phone vibrate across her desk while internally struggling on whether she should talk to the sexy brunette that was plaguing her like a bad disease.

In the end Emily knew she really had no choice in the matter and so she grabbed for the phone before the third ring even had a chance to finish.

"Becca," Emily answered with a light sigh. Hopefully the brunette would pick up on how busy Emily was with by that sound alone.

"Emmy," Rebecca playfully drawled. It would seem that Emily couldn't be so lucky.

Well, I might as well enjoy the reprieve while I have it and then afterward I'll work twice as hard to make up for the lost time.

"What can I do for you, love?" Emily asked in a decidedly sweeter tone than she had used only moments before.

"I was just curious what time you think you'll be showing up tonight," Rebecca's voice dropped to a sultry husk. "Although if you meant what you could do for me in general, I'm sure I could come up with a much more entertaining request."

Emily groaned. "Ugh, please don't tease me. I don't have the time to even think about that right now."

"Busy day?"

"Like you wouldn't believe."

Rebecca's tone turned from sexy to sympathetic in a matter of seconds. "Aww, I'm sorry baby. Anything I can do to help?"

"Not unless you can clone me so I can finish this workload quicker," Emily scoffed.

"Sorry, I'm all out of that tech."

"Shame," Emily said and allowed herself to chuckle at the joke. "Well, as you can probably tell I'm bound to be a little late, but I promise that I'm doing everything I can to hurry out of here."

"Well don't push yourself, you have plenty of time. However," that playful tone seeped back into Rebecca's voice. "I can't wait for you to see my costume."

"What did I tell you about teasing me, woman?" Emily growled.

"That you love it and you want me to tease you all night?"

"Oh fuck," Emily ran a hand through her hair again and exhaled roughly. "Well, we'll see if I ever get out of here."

"I look forward to it."

"Me too," Emily replied honestly.

"I'll let you get back to it then. Maybe you'll have a little more motivation to power through now that you know what's waiting for you when you finish," Rebecca said.

"I sure as hell hope so. Although I have a bad feeling that all you did was make things a whole lot harder."

"That's what I do best, don't you know?" Rebecca chuckled. "Anyways, you get back to work Emmy. I'll see you tonight."

"Yeah, yeah," Emily sighed for what felt like the millionth time today. "Bye Becca."

Emily turned back to face the workload on her desk with a grim face. After eyeing the various files up on her PC for a few moments, she let her head fall forward to hit the hard wood of the desk. Rebecca's words definitely hadn't helped.

Things started to swing into full party mode as more people began to fill up the Stantons' house and soon Rebecca found herself running all over the place as she attempted to play hostess to all the guests. Generally this was something that Celia took care of, but this year Rebecca graciously offered to be a second pair of hands. It might have had something to do with the recent news of Celia's pending motherhood, however Rebecca would argue that this years party was bigger than any other before and so more people just needed to chip in. At least that's what Rebecca said when Celia was around, since her mother figure was convinced – and rightly so – that everyone was just trying to coddle her.

Rebecca scanned the room in her quick moment of doing nothing. She searched every face in hopes of seeing Emily, but the blonde was still a no show. Rebecca knew that the girl was bound to be late, but this was just ridiculous. Couldn't she have put some of that stuff off until Monday?

With a frustrated sigh, Rebecca headed back toward the kitchen. She had seen that one of the tables was running low on snacks just a moment before and with any luck she could get a preemptive strike on it before Celia could lift a finger. Before Rebecca could get too far though, she found herself being dragged backward by the fabric of her top.

Rebecca spun around with a hopeful look in her eyes, but her face fell when she realized it was only Evie. "Oh. Hey."

"Wow. Sound so happy to see me, why don't you?" Evie replied sarcastically and placed her hands on her hips just above a pair of low slung belts with toy six shooters hanging from the holsters.

Rebecca had to grin at Evie's costume choice more than her presence. The brunette would have never pegged Evie as someone that would dress up as a cowgirl, but if that's what she wanted then Rebecca wasn't going to argue. Besides, the cow printed vest and pink stetson did make the otherwise intimidating little redhead rather adorable. Rebecca was almost tempted to pinch Evie's cheek.

Standing behind Evie was her boyfriend, Oliver. He was wearing bloodied blue scrubs and a surgeons mask around his neck. Something about this costume seemed more fitting to what Rebecca expected Evie to wear, which made the brunette grin a bit wider. They really were perfect for each other.

The pair had been together for close to six months now and Rebecca had to wonder if this was finally going to be the guy that Evie dragged along for the long haul. He had sure lasted longer than any of the others before him, so that was something in itself. If Oliver could handle all of Evie's crazy – and thus far he had done so spectacularly – then Rebecca was sure that they were bound to be together for quite some time.

"Sorry," Rebecca answered finally and twirled the length of her high ponytail around one finger. "I was hoping you were someone else."

"Yeah. You wanted me to be Emily. I know," Evie rolled her eyes. "Where is the midget anyways?"

"I don't wanna be that guy, but you're only like two inches taller than Emily babe," Oliver piped up. Rebecca set him with a winning smile before throwing a playful sneer at Evie that was quickly reciprocated by the redhead.

"She's still at the office. I guess there was a lot to get done today." It was impossible for Rebecca to mask the disappointment in her voice as she relayed this fact.

Evie pursed her lips and looked at her best friend's sad face. "I'm sure she'll be here soon," Evie said with a shrug in an attempt to be comforting.

A half smile crept onto Rebecca's face. "Yeah, you're probably right."

"Ahoy! What are me maties talking about?"

The three of them turned to the voice at the same time; Rebecca and Evie wore expressions of amusement, while Oliver went through looks of confusion, surprise and then finally awe. Rawly stood behind them clothed in an elaborate pirate garb while stroking the goatee he had grown out for this very occasion – something Rebecca had been wondering about for the past few weeks since the facial hair looked so foreign on his face. Honestly, Rebecca couldn't stop staring at Rawly's costume because the amount of detail he had put into it was absolutely mesmerizing.

A long red coat adorned with heavy brass buttons was overlaid a very authentic looking ruffled shirt and vest combo. Belts and sashes circled Rawly's waist and a cutlass hung at a jaunted angle from one of the belts. A tricorn hat and long boots made the whole outfit complete for a captain of the high seas.

"Damn dude! Where'd you get that costume?" Oliver exclaimed.

Rawly gripped the edges of his coat and lifted himself to full height. "Made it myself. Me and Celia always make our own costumes."

"And they always go overboard so no one forgets who the undisputed king and queen of Halloween are," Evie added in and took a sip from her plastic red cup with a roll of her eyes.

"Well that's not very nice," Rawly said with a pout. "You know this is our favorite holiday!"

"Trust me Rawly, no one is ever going to forget. You make it impossible," Rebecca said with a chuckle and patted his arm.

"I oughta make the two of ye walk the plank for this slanderous talk to yer captain," Rawly drawled in a very convincing pirate voice, while eyeing Evie and Rebecca suspiciously.

"Now, now Blackbeard. Let's not feed them to the fishes quite yet," Celia said and swept into the little circle that the friends had unconsciously made during their conversation.

Rawly grinned at his wife's arrival. "Ah! there's me wench!"

"Keep calling me that and see what happens, captain," Celia replied with a quirked brow.

"Sassy one aren't you?" Rawly asked with a wink.

Celia was also dressed in a magnificently detailed pirates costume, although admittedly a less extravagant one than what her husband wore. There was no hat to Celia's costume, instead a red and white stripped bandanna was wrapped around her head. The coat and cutlass were also absent from Celia's look, in it's place were a pair of flintlock pistols jammed into the sash around her waist.

Rebecca could just barely make out a small baby bump that was cleverly hidden among the multiple layers of Celia's costume. You would have to know it was there in the first place to even notice it, but it was still there all the same. Every time Rebecca saw that little lump it made her feel uncontrollably happy for her friends and the journey they were on. Celia and Rawly were bound to be the best parents ever.

"All we need now is for Emily to show up and get all cutesy with Rebecca and I'll be ready for a proper vomit," Evie remarked with a shake of her head.

Rebecca set her friend with a look of disbelief before she turned to Oliver. "You put up with this willingly?"

"I like to think that our relationship is based off of a mutual love of sarcasm, which is generally directed at each other," Oliver shrugged and kissed Evie's cheek.

Evie smiled up at her boyfriend and nudged his shoulder with her own. "That's my man."

Rebecca smiled at this adorable interaction between Evie and Oliver. They were pretty cute in their own weird way. She turned to see Rawly slip an arm around Celia's shoulders and suddenly that smile began to fade a bit. Everyone was coupled up around her and yet her own significant other was nowhere to be found,

Where in the hell was that woman?

After finally getting out of the office, hopping into a quick shower and going through the mad scramble of getting her costume in order, Emily was on her to the Stantons' at long last. Emily was sure that Rebecca was bound to be irritated with how late she was, but there wasn't much she could do about it. Besides, she finally made it and that should count for something.

Emily took one more look at herself before she made her way inside to join the rest of the party. Her costume – if you could call it that – was a far cry to the way she actually dressed when she was younger. Instead of the horrible sweaters and khaki slacks or jeans and T-shirt combo she was once so fond of, Emily decided to take a bit of a different approach in her 'nerdy' attire.

An approach that included knee high socks and a plaid skirt paired with black suspenders. A white button up with the sleeves rolled up was tucked into the skirt and of course, like any self respecting nerd, she wore thick glasses. The centerpiece to the whole costume, however, was a bushy blonde wig that was so reminiscent to her hair back when she was a teenager. If that little detail didn't give Rebecca a good laugh then Emily would be a tad disappointed.

Emily had been to the last two parties that the Stantons' had thrown for their annual Halloween bash, so she had an idea of how crazy it could get, but upon entering the home she was shocked by the turnout this year. There must have been at least a hundred people packed into the house and backyard of the Stanton property. On top of the extreme number of guests, they had really gone all out with the decorations as well.

A number of elaborately carved jack-o-lanterns lined the walkway up to the front door, which had Emily stopping every few steps to get a good look at the amount of painstaking detail that went into each pumpkin. Inside of the house was even more impressive. There were fake cobwebs lining the walls in patterns that looked perfectly natural, candles sticking out of skull containers – that looked almost too real to Emily's eyes – and some of the doors and windows were even boarded up haphazardly as if Rawly and Celia were preparing for some kind of zombie outbreak.

"Really outdid yourselves this time," Emily muttered as she made her way through the numerous party guests.

After a bit of looking, Emily finally spotted Rebecca standing in a circle with the Stantons, Evie and Oliver. She began to make her way towards her girlfriend, but stopped just short of the little group when she finally made out all of Rebecca – specifically the tight polyester outfit she was wearing. It had been a long time since Emily had seen the purple and white colors of the Branson Bulldogs against Rebecca's tanned skin and it was a treat for Emily's eyes. It also did quite a number inside the blonde's panties.

"Hey! Look who finally showed up!" Rawly exclaimed.

All at once, everyone in the circle turned to see the new addition walking up. Rebecca's brows arose into her hairline as soon as she took in what Emily had on. It was especially amusing to see the wig that Emily was wearing, which instantly took Rebecca back to their high school days.

"Sorry I'm late," Emily said. "It's been a rough day."

"Well you're here now," Celia remarked and hugged the blonde.

Emily had become one of Celia's 'kids' not long after she started dating Rebecca and while she had never been fond of the family concept before, the Stantons – Celia especially – made Emily change her opinion on the whole matter.

"Hey you," Rebecca said with a grin once Emily had been released by Celia.

"Hey to you too," Emily replied and stood on her tiptoes to place a kiss on Rebecca's lips. She wasn't used to flats after years of wearing heels and she definitely didn't like the height disadvantage she had compared to her girlfriend.

Rebecca had a completely different opinion on the matter however. She liked having those few inches over Emily. Perhaps it was just her costume talking, but it made her feel powerful to tower over her girlfriend like she used to in their youth.

With Emily's arrival, the little group began a nonsense conversation once more. However, Rebecca couldn't help noticing how Celia kept looking around the room with a furrowed brow. It was as if she were mentally calculating something.

"What's wrong mama bear?" Rebecca finally asked after watching Celia for a few minutes.

Celia looked up in surprise. "Hmm? Oh, nothing. I just think we need to set more punch out. You know, Rawly's special kind."

"Say no more. I've got it."

"Oh no, it's fine dear. You've helped quite enough tonight," Celia argued. Rebecca was having none of it though.

"I've got it," the brunette replied firmly. "You just hang out and have fun, I'll make the rounds."

Rebecca soon found out just how much work Celia did at one of these big Halloween blowouts. There was always something else that needed to be replaced or taken care of. On top of that, there were so many chatty party goers – an unfortunate side effect of Rawly's 'special' punch – that Rebecca found herself in more than one conversation that she couldn't seem to gracefully bow out of. How Celia did this with a smile on her face year after year was beyond Rebecca. The woman had to be superhuman.
