She called back to him, "Yes, they are." Then she held up my hand so the sun could catch the stone once more and added, "I believe they will be together a long time and hope they find as much happiness as we have."

The man replied, "Congratulations! I echo Kate's wishes."

We exchanged a few more words across the distance between us. I was only partly aware that Tom had seemed slightly distracted and had been looking back and forth between Kate and myself. Then the man on the other trail called, "Well, nice to have met you, even if from a distance, but I'm afraid we really do need to be going." Then he turned toward his wife and called, "Come on, Kitty Kate. We've places to go and things to do," before turning and starting on down his trail.

Kate immediately replied, "All right, Lover." Then she turned toward us and bid us farewell before turning and striding out along the trail to meet her husband.

We stood watching her move on down the path with a step much younger than her years until she rounded a corner. Then Tom turned to me. Just as I started to say, "Didn't he look almost like ...", he also said, "Kate, she looked just like ..."

We both stopped and looked at each other and then down the trails where the older couple had disappeared. We looked back at each other, his face painted with the question. My own face probably reflected his. Neither of us spoke for a half minute than he put his arm around my waist and turned me back down the trail in the direction of the campus. He gave me a quick kiss and said, "Yes, Kitty Kate, we also have places to go and things to do."

I gave the kiss back and replied, "Yes, Lover, a lot of places and a lot of things."

An obvious mechanism to pass along advice. Or is it?

The minute the strange woman appeared on the trail and said her name was Kate, the supernatural theme of the story became obvious. The advice she gave seemed meaningful, but you don't hear the rebuttal. The trouble with so much advice, both personal and political is that you get only one side at a time and you really should take the time to hear the other side and give solid thought to both sides of the argument before you make a decision.

I lost a love when I was a new college graduate because of a fluke in the delivery of a letter and to some extent I always regretted it. But, I know I became a different person after that and perhaps it worked out for the best. My outlook on life, my goals and my politics have all changed significantly. Maybe we would have changed together, but perhaps it is best to get a good handle on who you are and what you want out of life before you make a lifetime decision. I can only think that Kate and Tom (the younger) were too young and inexperienced to make serious decisions and should have gone into the real world to learn more before making them. The counter argument is that you can learn together and grow together if you really work at it.

In the 55 years since I lost that first love I have been with three women: divorced twice and widowed once and now I'm alone. Who knows if my first love and I would have stayed together for 55 years. Life is a crap shoot and all you can do is roll the dice.

(By the way, if the other Kate was really 96 now she would have lived at the time when Damon Runyon wrote. He would have been before her time only if that Kate was the future manifestation of the younger Kate.) Worth 4* to me.

deleted?

This is not an old story. It was first submitted less than a week ago and was first posted on Sunday. I'm not sure what you're thinking about.

Very good story

Even though it is a well crafted tale, I personally just couldn't get into. I did rate it at 5.

What a great story... And what great advice I wish I had received.

Reading this story brought a lump to my throat. Normally, Lit helps bring a lump to my pants... I suspect that you must be a contemporary of mine or, if you're not, you've beautifully captured what I experienced as a child of the 60s, entering college in 1969 and experiencing love for the first time. Her name wasn't Kate and mine isn't Tom; we were both freshmen and spent a lot of time in the woods. Like your characters, we did "everything"...BUT have intercourse, denying ourselves for the same reasons your characters did. It was probably the biggest reason that we broke up early in our sophomore years; she wanted it, I was the reluctant one. By that Christmas she was engaged to another guy and they married before graduation. And subsequently divorced a few years later. Although we live within an hour of each other, I have never seen her again since college, yet I think of her often. Now in our 60s, I suspect we may not feel as attractive to each other as we once did. She was my first love and, in hindsight, should have been my first lover. Thank you again for a wonderful story and sage advice. If your name happens to be Christine, I would love to hear from you.... John.
