It was a pure joy to receive my new custom-designed prostheses. These were non-detachable, and in fact were surgically integrated with my flesh, complete with interconnecting nanocircuitry and yet another infusion of nanites. My mental connection with the robotics was excellent, and I even had partial sensation.
They were far superior to the temporary prostheses I had lived with for months. The limbs were shaped perfectly to match my missing ones, and their colouring could be controlled along with the whimsical designs of my chameleon skin; but they were also translucent, so that the mechanism within could be perceived.
They felt like a real part of me. And yet, just as all my life I had struggled against the presumption that I was a woman, I found myself staring in the mirror at someone who was barely even human. Whoever Sam Jones should have been was long buried under years of pretence and layers of technology.
This sense of being alien was not helped by my new eye, which, although it appeared to the human eye to be identical to the old, was open to a far wider spectrum of light than the narrow optical band I was used to. My eyes now saw two very different universes, one very much brighter than the other.
But for the first time since the accident, I was able to wear my stilettos, and to walk in public with a short skirt and bare arms, and without feeling broken.
I might no longer be entirely human, but I felt sexy again.
I felt good.

oldpantythief5 months agoI've enjoyed reading this series very much and would like to see more of the "Ships Whore". That's what has me cracking up, being listed for what she is, the ships whore, not something seen every day, lol. All in all, a very entertaining story and hope there will be more chapters.

Yes, I definitely need to write more in this series, but I'm still undecided about how to get her there.
Anonymous12 months agoIf she gets hit by an EMP all those nanites in her blood would likely get clogged up in her veins killing her in minutes. Personally the limbs being replaced was a nice touch but the corset part could have been left out and leaving the breathing tech just to her neck. But you're the author so do what you will. Overall a fantastic story even if this chapter felt a tad rushed. Hope we get a new part soon.
AlinaXalmost 2 years agoAuthorYou're not the first to say that, and maybe you're right. It could be more angsty.
I had this idea that she has this traumatic incident that nearly kills her but certainly leaves her feeling like less than a whole person, but she's in a weird environment where this is a more or less daily occurence. With our early 21st Century technology, she'd be in hospital for weeks, with trauma counselling and everything, but out at Sol Station she's patched up within hours and sent back out into the world.
[Once again I'm not entirely sure what Sam's pronouns are, but I'm thinking she's probably okay with she/her.]
