Jason sipped his coffee. "Have you said anything to him about this?"
"No...I'm scared to."
"Mike is a lot like me Jan; we've grown up being told by our mothers to not force ourselves on women. So it backfires on them sometimes when girls want us to be more assertive. Mixed signals are hard to read.
Rachel leaned forward and winked at Jason, and then she turned to Janet. "Turn up the heat a little, you have a beautiful body Jan, use it. If Jason's right and Mike is anything like him, put on five inch stilettos and a plunging neckline and he'll be putty in your hands."
Jason nodded. "So true."
Rachel got up and walked into the kitchen to pour herself another cup of coffee. "I know, give him a special treat for Thanksgiving. He'll never forget that holiday, I guarantee it."
"Speaking of Thanksgiving, Rachel and I just got invited to her sister's for the big meal."
"Do you have a big family Rachel?"
"No, it was just me and my sister. My parents moved to Florida when I went to college and my sister lives in the suburbs. She's married with two kids."
"How about you Jessie?"
"My family are all military so they're on the move all the time. I'm not very close to any of them except my cousin Karen and my grandmother; both of them live in Cincinnati. How about you?"
"I'm from the typical suburban family, husband, wife, three kids, a dog and a cat. We grew up in New Jersey near Trenton. Mom and Dad are still there, retired now. I was the baby of the family. Mom thought they were stopping at two until I came along." She grinned sheepishly. "I was conceived in the backseat of a 59 Chevy. My dad is an old car buff.
Growing up in the 'burbs' meant the usual things, cub scouts, baseball, soccer. Because I was the youngest I probably had it the easiest, my older brother was the trailblazer in the family. He was the one who Dad was the hardest on. Which is probably why Tom was so angry when I decided to go through the change. I think he'd always been a bit jealous of the way Dad was with me. Beth, my sister, was indifferent. As long as I didn't try to be a part of her life, she didn't care one way or the other. Of course that meant I couldn't see my nieces either, or Tom's twins."
Her eyes began to tear up. Rachel handed her a tissue and she dabbed them dry. "Thanks."
Jessie stood up and walked over to Janet. He sat down next to her and wrapped his arm around her shoulder. She relaxed a little and smiled meekly.
"So, I moved here and started over. That was three years ago. I didn't start living full-time as a woman until I had some work done. These," she lifted her breasts slightly, "and a little nip and tuck up here," her hand brushed by her cheeks and throat, "needed to be done to complete the look."
Rachel leaned forward and took her hand. "They did beautiful work Jan, you're gorgeous."
Janet blushed and sent Rachel and air-kiss. "Flatterer."
"Anyway, jobs were difficult until after the surgery. I finally landed the design assistant job downtown last year. It's hard work and the hours can be long sometimes, but fun, well," she chuckled, "sometimes it's fun."
Jessie stood up and got his cup of coffee from the counter. He turned and sat on a stool. "When did you meet Brie?"
"Oh, at work actually. She was an assistant to one of the firm's clients. We hit it off but not sexually. She was into hunks like the two doorknobs she introduced me too at Sarah's when I met you guys. Don't get me wrong, I like Brie, but her fascination with six-pack abs is so boring."
Rachel smiled and nodded. "Your family, are they supportive? Other than your brother and sister, I mean."
"No. I'd been sneaking HRT drugs for a couple of years before my mom found out. A friend of mine introduced me to a pharmacist in North Philly who helped me...for a price, of course. That went along fine for a while. My body was beginning to change, to soften and get curvy. I even had breasts; they were smaller then but natural. Everything was fine until I broke my arm."
"What happened?"
"Skateboarding. Mom took me to the doctor and he did some routine blood tests. When the results came back Mom and Dad exploded. When the dust settled six months later I was on a bus coming here and looking for work."
Everyone was quiet for a moment then Jason smiled and nodded. "Rachel is right, Thanksgiving is just perfect."
Janet looked up quizzically.
"Mike is by himself too. His family lives in Muncie, Indiana. In the past he usually called me up to hang and watch football but when I started dating Rachel that all changed. This is great. Call him, right now. Invite him over for an early dinner."
Janet glanced at Rachel. "Should I? Now?"
"If you want we can go out onto the terrace while you call him."
"No, no." She rummaged through her purse and pulled out her cellphone, quickly dialed, and then listened to it ring.
"Hi Mike, it's me Janet. Uh-huh, do you have plans for Thanksgiving? Uh-huh. Would you like to join me for an early dinner? Great! Around four o'clock maybe? Cool. What can you bring? I don't know, ah..."
Janet glanced over to see Jessie frantically waving his hands. He mouthed the word 'dessert'.
"How about you bring the dessert? Great. Yes? Oh, no problem, say hi to Jason when you see him next week. Yeah, bye." She collapsed on the sofa in giggles and smiles.
"Now there is only one more teensy little issue."
Rachel and Jessie leaned forward. "What?"
"I don't know how to cook."

Excellent Continuation....
.... of a beautiful work. I love how your characters grow with each new addition, and how you have their relationships grow with them. Such a wonderful group of interesting and together people. I do so enjoy the way your dialogue brings the reader into the story. The characters are all so upbeat and the sort of people I would love to be involved with. Their caring, understanding, and acceptance is admirable. Thank you again for another lovely look into their stories.more...
