Snake Bite Ch. 02

"Mercy, you're going to give me a heart attack!"

"No...Well, the conference room door was open and I heard you speaking about New York City, mixing business with humor. I enjoyed listening to you. My seeing you at the library was totally accidental. When I went outside, I pulled an ignition wire on the car. You looked like you were ready to pack it up. I really wanted to talk with you about the City. I'm not in the habit of picking up men. The stunt with the car was really dumb.

One thing led to another...after a while it was too late to mention Harry. If I had known there was any possibility you'd wind up in my bed, I'd have disappeared faster than the Roadrunner!"

There was silence.

"Bill, say something."

"Untie me!"

"No."

"Mercy, the only people I'm concerned about are you, my family and your family. Can you imagine the reaction?"

"Bill, sell the apartment...we'll buy Bali!"

"Uhmm. Can we sell the Degas? I'm rather attached to the apartment."

"Mercy, I do love you and I'd like to be with you the rest of my life, but we've got to face reality."

"The reality is you and me. It's not going to be totally smooth with your family or mine, but I know you can be convincing and I can damn well fight for what I want."

Total silence...and more silence. We just stared at each other.

"OK, dimmy. You win! Now untie me, please."

"No."

I jumped on him. I kissed his nose, his eyes, his lips. I think he looked happy!

"Uhmm, Bill, one more thing."

"What?"

"Will you come home with me for Thanksgiving?"

"Yes."

"One more tiny thing?"

"What now?"

"I don't want a big wedding...just the family, in my church and I'd like to wear my beautiful, blue dress and can we do it at Christmas?"
