That got his attention. "She's not afraid of you?"
"Not even a little. And I'm scary." She squeezed his shoulder. "Don't be an idiot and push her away because you love her. Believe me, I know these things."
"If she walked away from me, if something happened to her, I don't know what I'd do."
"None of us know what will happen from one day to the next. The old cliché, 'I could get his by a bus tomorrow' is a cliché for a reason, Reid. Here's the question, the important question: If you knew she was going to disappear tomorrow, would you rather go back and never meet her to avoid the pain, or embrace the last day you have together because you can't imagine not knowing her even for a short time?"
He lowered his head to his hands. "I'm completely in love with her."
"You bet your ass you are." She squeezed his shoulder again before turning to leave. Over her own shoulder, she grinned and told him, "Tell your brother he owes me fifty bucks."
"Which brother?"
"Both of 'em." With a wicked grin, she disappeared into the crowd.
