"This star, named Chara by the ancients, and today known as Beta Canum Venaticorum, has long been a candidate for extrasolar planets. While observing this star over a period of several days, we found to our shock that a nearby large mass of gas had apparently reached the critical threshold to reach ignition and had begun the nuclear fusion process.

Your mistake about the light-years. It's not a mistake unless you allow it to be. This is fiction, fantasy. Just as in my case, I tend to allow characters too many orgasms (perhaps because I like orgasms), in your story, are we going to allow a minor detail like 15 light-years to get in the way of what is otherwise a great story?
