"I just want to touch you, Janetta."
"Why, Ranji? We're only here for a few months. Why can't we just fuck while we're here and enjoy it? If I open my heart to you, it will only get broken."
"I can ask to get posted wherever you go."
"You can't help making it complicated, can you? Even if I wanted to, we can't get married, so why put ourselves through this?"
Married? So she was thinking of me, too. "Just think about it, okay?" I caressed her cheek again. "By the gods, you are beautiful."
She hopped off the desk and went to the fresh rag bin. She folded one and put it into the straps on the hanging panel of her coverall. Then she zipped up both sides.
"You like me, despite my complications, don't you?"
She just growled.
"When can I see you next?"
Her hand reached for the door.
"Janetta?"
"Okay, already! Come by next week, after classes and after first shift. No promises, but I'll see what I can do." She flung open the door and to the three women standing by the gutted jet, announced, "Okay, the Bitch Queen is back. Let's get to work!"
I watched her a few moments as she took charge of her work crew. I secured my pistol and headed back out the way I entered the building.
As I drove back to the motor pool, my mind worked over what had happened. It bothered me that once again it had taken someone else to open my eyes to what was patently obvious. Like my father's talk about Calia, and treating the woman as a sexual partner rather than just someone to ejaculate into. Now, Janetta, this woman I craved, was showing me how tough women had it, even in the Warrior caste. I had no illusions about my ability to change things. But even with everything hemming her in, she seemed to enjoy being with me.
Then I hit the brakes, and the tires protested as they dug into the asphalt.
She had called me Ranji. When we were done with the sex, she had called me Ranji!
The grin on my face wouldn't go away, even as I rushed through the rest of the evening and finally settled into bed. "Janetta," I whispered, and closed my eyes, smiling.

TJSkywindover 8 years agoAuthorAlmost harder to write, for it flies in the face of what I personally believe.
And as ugly as such a society must be, I see many groups in our modern world trying so hard to make that ugly path manifest. When one gender controls and dominates another as property, we are all diminished, and so much potential is lost under the boot of cruelty.
Still, I am growing quite fond of Janetta Tlacotli, the warrior woman who refuses to be broken or thwarted, and her fiercely loyal flight crew.
superfeluously_eover 9 years agoI really like the story but the idea of males that outrank females have free reign to do what they want with them kind of kills the mood for me. I want to care about the characters but this happening really irks me and makes the story stressful rather than enjoyable.
Your writing is superb though:)
