"Just go away," he answered, turning his back on her, staring into the empty fireplace.

Silently, Cassia left the house as her wolf howled and tried to get her to return.

"No, my wolf, we must leave him."

Each step was like dragging a dead weight behind her, a sheen of tears entering her eyes. The scent of Pietro de la Rios followed her, her wolf's mournful cries overwhelmed her, but she kept walking, kept putting one foot in front of the other, making her way back to the lab. Now was not the time. Maybe there would come a time, but it was something she couldn't explore right now. Sometimes the wolf had to wait, no matter how much it cried out...

"Mine!"

*****

"Cass?" Dara's mental touch was an instant balm, the lone word sent with so much love that Cassia's wolf automatically responded and her agitation subsided a bit. She rolled her shoulders and stepped back from the microscope she'd been intent on for so long, cocking her head to the side as she was prone to do when Dara contacted her.

She could tell instantly that it was late, and she blinked in surprise to see she was alone in the lab. When had everyone gone? Pinching the bridge of her nose to try to stave off a headache, she had vague memories of people saying goodnight and waving a hand in acknowledgement. That felt like hours ago.

"Dad's threatening to come over and yank you out of the lab if you don't come home," her sister said, and she sighed loudly, conceding she needed to get home.

"I'm just leaving now, Dara." Cassia took the time to ensure any experiments running were secure, and all samples safely locked up before she unclipped the clasp at the nape of her neck and ran weary hands through her tangled curls.

The consequences of meeting Pietro had been so unexpected that burying herself in work had been the only thing she could do until she worked out how to proceed. Her wolf had no reticence about what they should be doing, however, the woman did. Was the vampire really her mate or was she just reacting to being around his scent so much? Did hybrids know their mates instantly as Weres did? Lily said yes but that didn't mean it worked the same for all of them. Did it?

As she headed out of the lab, she couldn't keep her eyes from wandering to the house he was in. The light was on in his bedroom window and her feet wanted to move in that direction but she forced herself to turn for home. Dara wasn't kidding about their father, he would come looking for her if she didn't show up soon. As Dads went, theirs was pretty reasonable compared to most of the other hybrids, however, he was still prone to the usual over-protectiveness shared by all the alpha males of the pack. It was best to heed him when he did start making noises of displeasure.

Crossing the compound quickly, Cassia let herself into the house she shared with her parents and sister. She was surprised her parents weren't waiting up when she got in. Instead, the house was quiet so she headed into the kitchen to grab something to eat.

Their kitchen had a homely feel to it, with cedar wood cabinets, complete with a standalone dresser on the wall as they entered the room. The long breakfast bar created a feel of being enclosed within the main cooking area, extending out from the wall for a few feet before tapering in at a forty-five degree angle. It took up most of the length of the room and had six wrought-iron chairs with plush cushioned seats on the outside edge so people could sit and chat with whoever was cooking.

Cassia loved the kitchen and her mother's tales of how her father had cursed the entire time he'd helped their grandfather build it. No one had been allowed in the house when it was being built and Alexei had threatened everyone with pain of death if they mentioned he'd helped. Just imagining their father with a hammer and nails had been enough to make her and Dara laugh until tears ran down their faces.

With a smile playing on her lips, Cassia opened the refrigerator and took out a plate of chicken, biting into a piece before placing it on the bar. It was 1am by the kitchen clock and not an ideal time to be eating but thankfully, her metabolism was so good that eating this late wouldn't be an issue. She began making a pot of tea, hearing her sister coming downstairs.

"Pour me one too, please."

She was already getting a second cup from the overhead cupboard as Dara walked in. Her sister padded in with bare feet and wearing a dark blue nightshirt. She was clearly ready for bed though she appeared wide awake as if she had something on her mind. That made two of them!

Cassia wasn't so lost in her own issues that she wasn't aware something had happened that had startled her sister. As Dara hopped up onto a chair, she poured out the tea and walked around to join her. "So, we haven't had any chance to talk with all the stuff going on. What's on your mind?"

Dara frowned and unknowingly imitated her sister's earlier headache appeasing pinch of the nose. She had known Cassia wouldn't forget about catching up, the only thing was, she didn't know if she could break Kothi's confidence. She told her sister everything but what had happened that day with their friend was highly personal and he shared little with anyone as it was. It seemed wrong to talk about it.

"Come on, Dara, it's been bugging you whatever it is. Will it help if I promise not to say anything?"

She met her sister's gaze and knew she would keep any confidence given unless it was detrimental to the pack. The question was, did Kothari's loss of control constitute a detriment to the pack? It was hard to make the right judgement call when her emotions were so conflicted. Maybe she should tell Cassia and let her make the decision, or was that the coward's way out?

Sighing deeply, Dara sipped at her tea and reached for a piece of chicken. "The other day I came across Kothari in the forest, down by the lake. He was more intense than usual, Cass. We talked a little and then he was suddenly furious for no apparent reason." Dara bit into the chicken, staring down into her cup as she chewed thoughtfully.

"Did he hurt you, Dara?" Cassia quiet question had her head shooting back up and they stared at each other for a long moment before she could speak.

"Sort of," she admitted sensing her sister's automatic tensing as she uttered the words. "He didn't mean to, Cass, I know he didn't." She rushed on before her sister could say anything further. "It was as if he lost control for a moment and his vampiric side took over. He was bleeding, large cuts forming on his chest as if they were self-inflicted in some way though he didn't cut himself physically. I shifted to wolf form and tried to balance him that way. It triggered his panther and he shifted too."

She met her sister's gaze again, confusion in her eyes. "Cass, he was so surprised to see his animal. It was almost as if he hadn't seen that part of himself for such a long time."

Dara's words frightened Cassia, as did the plea in her voice. She knew she wanted her to keep this secret but if what her sister said was true – then Kothi was in serious trouble and needed some kind of intervention. How could she not say something to their parents and Alphas? "Dara..."

"Please, Cassia, don't tell anyone. Kothi didn't hurt me really, and he was as shaken by what happened as I was. He loves the pack and us, you know he does. He saved Lily right after that happened. Whatever his issues are, he's been working through them all his life alone. Now that I know, now that he has someone to talk to, maybe I can help him."

"No!" Cassia jumped down from her chair and began pacing the kitchen. Her thoughts were in turmoil, her fear for her sister heightened. Dara always did have a selfless heart but what she was proposing, it was ludicrous. She loved Kothi as much as her sister did but when it came down to it; Dara's safety would always come first. "This is serious, Dara. This isn't like one of our other secrets where no one gets hurt. What if Kothi loses control and does hurt you? We have to tell Rafe about this, Kal too and his parents."

"He won't, Cass, I know he won't!" Dara jumped down from her chair and halted her sister's pacing. "Please, trust that I know what I'm doing. I can help Kothi."

"If he lets you!" Cassia shot back, frowning. "You know how isolated he's always been. What makes you think he'll even listen to you?"

Dara ran a weary hand through her hair and shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know why but I just feel it, Cass. My wolf isn't afraid of him, she feels the same way. Let me try, just for a little while. If it isn't going to work I'll know soon enough. We can go to Rafe then. Just let me try first, please!"

It went against her better judgement but her sister appeared so certain that Cassia found herself nodding her agreement. Deep down, she didn't truly believe Kothi would harm anyone in the pack, least of all one of the Vârcolac, but there was that one per cent of uncertainty with him that was hard to shake. The conviction in her sister's voice eased some of her foreboding though. Dara was a good judge of character. She had a level head and she trusted her implicitly. If Dara was sure she wouldn't be in any danger, then she had to trust that assessment.

Cassia dialled back her concern and allowed herself to relax, albeit reluctantly. "Okay, but if he does anything like that again, you call me instantly. Do not put yourself in harm's way. Are we clear on that?"

For an answer, Dara threw her arms around her, hugging her tightly. "Thanks, Cass. I promise I'll take care of myself."

She was probably making a huge mistake giving into her sister but Cassia's wolf was unconcerned about what she'd heard so she took that as a sign that there was no imminent danger. Maybe Dara would be good for Kothari. Maybe he would finally find some kind of peace and integrate better with them. She would keep an eye on him none-the-less. If he stepped out of line even remotely, she'd kick his ass so hard he'd wonder what hit him.

Dara was smiling with relief and hopping back into her chair so Cassia followed her, chewing on some more chicken in companionable silence. That was what she treasured most about being with her sister. They didn't have to talk all the time, they were just content to be in each other's company. She wasn't sure if she was ready to talk about what had happened with Pietro earlier but she found her mind constantly going to him and her body positioning itself at an angle so she was half looking towards the front door.

Dara noticed too and shot her a quizzical look. "Okay, you know what's going on with me, so how about you tell me why you look as if you're about to go running out the front door any second now?"

Cassia swallowed and then finished her tea, taking her time before answering. "I went to visit Pietro today to get a hair sample to work on."

Her sister's eyes widened. "You did? What was he like? Is he really scarred like everyone says?"

For some reason Cassia felt herself prickle at the open curiosity on display. She knew Dara wasn't being mean but the talk of Pietro's scars irritated her. Her wolf began to prowl in agitation at the mere mention of them. How anyone could cause such damage to someone so beautiful was criminal, and the woman responsible was in the pack right now. She had the urge to walk over to the Eriksson's and beat the living daylights out of the other woman.

Her errant thoughts brought her up sharply and she blinked slowly as she pushed down at her wolf. She'd never in her life wanted to do anyone physical harm until that moment and it felt so strange to have such negativity flowing through her. Where the hell had that come from? Was this another indicator that the vampire was her mate for real? Her wolf was clearly acting territorial even if her vampiric side was coldly analysing the situation.

"Cass?"

Blinking again, she turned to look at her sister to see concern on her face.

"You're growling."

Dear God, she was and she hadn't even noticed it! Her wolf never took dominance to this extent; her dual nature was always finely balanced. "Stop it!" she remonstrated with the animal, struggling to push it into submissiveness. It fought her for a moment and then finally acquiesced though reluctantly.

"Sorry, Dara. My wolf is anxious right now and acting out of character. She has been since we met Pietro."

Her sister's eyes widened fractionally as she quickly put two and two together. It was a testament to how surprised she was that she instantly switched to their mental bond. "Pietro is your mate???"

Sighing Cassia ran her hands wearily over her face and propped her chin up with her hands, elbows on the counter top. "I don't know. My wolf keeps yelling 'mine' and working is the only thing that keeps my mind off him. It just seems too quick, Dara. He's been in the pack for a few days now, his scent is all around. If we do find our mates like pack, as Lily says, then why haven't I noticed this before today?"

Her sister took her time before answering, her expressive face showing her thought process. "He's been close to you in one form or another since you started working on the antidote. Maybe that was enough to soothe your wolf until you met him in the flesh?"

"I was wondering if that was maybe the case, too. I was happy to spend hours on end in the lab and felt antsy being away from it. My frustration levels were creeping up even then. Freya tried to dissuade me from going for the hair sample myself but I just ignored her and went. It was like I was compelled to but haven't realised it until now." Sighing, she scrubbed at her face again. "What am I going to do, Dar?"

Dara could understand her dilemma. Ordinarily, claiming a mate wasn't supposed to be a hard thing, though with Rafe's pack being made up of such interesting personalities, it was proving a bit of a trying time for most of them. Pietro came with a lot of damage, both physical and emotional. Cassia would have to find some way through his barriers to convince him he was a worthy mate. It wasn't going to be easy.

"He's so damaged," Cassia whispered, closing her eyes as she felt moisture begin to gather. Pietro's pain tore at her heart, as did the defeat in his beautifully miss-matched eyes. She knew he would fight any mating pull he experienced. "I'm not sure how to go about reaching him. If today is anything to go by, he's going to fight me every step of the way."

Dara slipped an arm around her sister and rested her head against her shoulder as Cassia automatically hugged her back. "If he belongs to you then you will find a way, Cass. I have faith in you. After all, how could he resist someone as beautiful, smart and funny as you?"

"I hope you're right, Dar. I have to be the strong one until he is ready to believe in himself again. I'll work on the antidote every hour I can spare. Maybe when I find a cure, Pietro will have a bit more confidence."

"I'm sure he will, Cass. I'll do anything I can to help too. You know that, don't you?"

She did, and the wealth of love and determination she felt down her bond with her sister made her smile. She could always count on Dara. Of that one thing, she was sure in her life. But she would have to go very carefully with the wounded vampire a few doors away. It would take all of her logic and cunning to ensnare that gorgeous male while he was oblivious to the fact. Her smile widening, she hugged Dara a little tighter. Pietro de la Rios had better watch out...because she was coming whether he liked it or not.

To be continued...

I am guessing that it is Elijah that is causing the trouble coming from Europe. I think he is still alive and wanting revenge

The bullets in the gun that Teresa used, they are laced with the poision . She was trying to reach for the gun after she shot Liam but she didn't get to the gun. The other bullets in the gun should have the poision in them or on the bullets. Where is that gun?

Why don’t they ask Thereasa about the poison? I’d think they’d literally torture her for it since she is now human.

For a second there i forgot about Psychopath #9, sorry, "Kothi"....

and REALLY hoped Dara and Cassia would both fall for Pietro. You know, just to make it more interesting and mix up the old formula, but of course even that would be too much for this Disney, Monogamy, Happily-ever-After, Married-Bliss Wonderland World you built. Oh, well....

Part of me snorts everytime ...

Part of me wishes the real world would work like this ...

Antidote

Love the story &your writing . Am glad I have just started reading all the series because I would be a nervous wreak waiting . One small issue , they should have the ammo Reasa used so the have a pure example to use to create the antidote, but that wouldn't have been as much drama.
