Click here"So, like a contract or something?", I asked.
"No, just a promise to a father from his beautiful, wonderful daughter. Just promise me to always remember how special you really are, OK?"
"OK, daddy, I promise." I said and I slid the ring onto my right ring finger. It fit perfectly.
I hugged him as tight as I could and wondered to myself how I ended up with the absolute best dad in the whole world.
"Did I miss something?" Mom asked as she rounded the corner into the kitchen. I shower her the ring. She smiled a broad smile and kissed my dad on the cheek right next to the bright pink mark I had left. "You have something on your cheek, honey."
"I know." He said as he smiled and got up to walk into the kitchen. "Who wants pancakes?"
The vote was unanimous. My dad could cook and the one thing he absolutely loved to do was fix pancakes. He usually did this on Sunday mornings but with all the changes an all the drama going on, nobody had felt like it and it had been a long time. The offer put us all in a good mood. My mom started the coffee pot and my dad headed for the pantry. I went to the fridge and got out the milk and eggs and a bottle of orange juice.
It was magical, as if nothing had happened and this was just the way it should always have been. I showed my mom the ring a dozen times and she filled me in on the details of our day ahead. Girls spa day in the city, massages, makeovers, manicures and pedicures and I was going to get my ears pierced and a nice set of gold studs.
It would all culminate with a 3:30 appointment at the courthouse where the judge would ask me if I really wanted to be a girl. Abby would be there, she had to testify about my mental stability and how I was dealing with the drastic changes I had gone through. Anne and Tommy were going to be there for moral support. I was pretty sure none of them had any idea what was coming. But that was OK, I had just figured it out, myself.
We cleaned up the breakfast mess and piled into the car for the drive into the city. My dad was going to visit a friend while my mom and I played. He would drop us off at the spa and would pick us up again at three o'clock sharp. That would give us just enough time to get to the courthouse. Hugs and kisses all around and he left us to our fun.
The spa day with my mom was beyond incredible. If you've never had a massage, OMG, get one. I had no idea how someone could spend two hours rubbing on somebody else's body, but I'm glad they were willing to do it. It was amazing. Lunch was included and was followed by the manicure and pedicure. I could get used to this very easily. I chose a bright pink polish, my new favorite color, and my mom got her traditional red.
The makeover was last. They pierced my ears and put in the studs I had chosen, trimmed my hair a little and parted it on the side, giving me long bangs that draped across my forehead. It really accented my eyes and made my cheek bones look higher or something. At least that's what the stylist said. I didn't care. It did look cute and I was just having too much fun to worry about it. Makeup was last. It was a world of difference to have it professionally done.
We walked out of the spa just as my dad pulled into the parking lot. He pretended not to recognize us, and we all had a good laugh. The drive to the courthouse was quiet. My nervousness from this morning had started to come back. It was all just too perfect. Something had to go wrong today, and this was the only thing left.
We parked and walked up to the building. Tommy was waiting outside for us and I skipped up the steps to give him a big hug.
"Wow, you look amazing!" The look in his eyes as he scanned my body told me he wasn't just saying that to be polite and I decided I liked it, a lot.
"Thanks." I said looking up into his big brown eyes. The nervousness I felt in the car disappeared. I kissed Tommy on the cheek, sliding my hand into his. He was confused for a second and then smiled as he closed his fingers around mine. I glanced back at my mom and dad and smiled as I noted their approval.
Anne was in the hallway outside the courtroom with, of all people, Dr. Mitchell. They both absolutely beamed when they saw me, especially noting that I was holding hands with Tommy and possibly looked happier than any human deserved to be.
I dropped Tommy's hand and ran up to Anne hugging her fiercely. "I'm so glad you're here. This means so much to me."
"I wouldn't miss this for anything." Anne hugged me back, "And I'm glad you figured out the Tommy thing."
I blushed and grinned. "In for a penny, in for a pound, right?" Tommy caught up with me and reclaimed my hand.
Dr. Mitchell couldn't stop smiling. "This is incredible. I have never seen a transition like this. You are absolutely stunning. And you look so happy."
"Careful Mary, you know I get jealous." Anne quipped.
I looked at the two of them and suddenly realized you would have to be blind to not notice they were a couple. "I think you're safe. Besides, I switched teams." I gave Tommy's hand a little squeeze. He pulled me closer and slid his hand around my waist. One more thing from today I could really get used to, I thought to myself.
Abby came out of the courtroom to let us know they were ready for us and did a double take when she saw me. Based on our last session, I'm pretty sure she wasn't expecting the Charly that showed up, especially with the very handsome young man she was obviously very fond of in tow. I smiled at Abby and waved. She smiled at me and I swear she winked, nodding her head in approval as she looked at Tommy.
I was discovering that everybody involved in this was in my corner. Maybe, just maybe, nothing would go wrong today. We filed into the courtroom and took our seats. The judge was already seated, and the bailiff called out our case. "In the issue of Charles Everet Baxter. Are all present and accounted before the court." Something official like that.
A man I didn't know in the front row stood up and said, "Yes, your honor." And sat back down. It turns out that my dad's friend was our lawyer.
"Abigale Spencer, do you have any comments for the court?" The judge asked without looking up from the papers he was reviewing.
Abby stood up and simply said, "No your honor. Everything is perfectly in order here." She turned around and smiled at me.
"Charles Baxter, please come forward.", Abby looked at me and nodded. My mom smiled and my dad gave me his famous grin. Anne and Mary were beaming and holding hands. Tommy just squeezed my hand. The man in the front looked back over his shoulder at me, stepped out toward the bench and motioned for me to join him. I stood up and fidgeted with my ring as I walked up to stand beside my lawyer.
The judge smiled at me and suddenly reminded me of my grandfather. "Well, I've read your file and you've been through quite a bit this summer, haven't you?"
"Yes, sir." I answered meekly.
"I understand you're adapting pretty well. Is that young man with you?" The judge looked right at Tommy.
"Yes sir, he is." I could feel myself blushing.
"You look pretty happy about things. Is everything ok?" His eyes locked on mine.
"Yes sir, it is. I mean I am. I mean. Yes sir, I'm very happy."
"And this is what you want."
I paused. My lawyer put his hand on my shoulder. "Yes, sir, it is." I finally said.
"Very well, then. If there are no objections, it is by the order of this court that the plea of the applicant be granted." And his gavel hit the desk.
I jumped at the sound and let out a muffled scream. I could hear Anne giggling behind me.
"Miss Baxter, this order comes with a chance to change your name to something more appropriate. Have you given that any consideration?" The tone of the judge's voice indicating that this was an important decision.
"Um, I really like Charly and Everet is a family name, I think Charlette?" I turned around to check my parent's reaction. My dad was nodding.
My mom said," Honey, what about Charlette Evette?" My dad added a smile to his nod. I glanced at Tommy and got a big smile. It occurred to me he was just happy I had acknowledged I was with him and would have been happy with Fred.
I turned back to the judge and Said, "I think that's the one."
"Well, Charlette Evette Baxter, it's nice to meet you." He leaned over the bench to shake my hand and looked at the court recorder as if to reminded her to make sure the papers were properly filed.
"Charlette with an 'o' or an 'e'?" the court reporter asked matter-of-factly.
I paused for a second, "e" I answered.
My lawyer guided me back to my seat as the Bailiff said, "All rise." The judge left the room. "This session of the Third District Court is adjourned."
It had taken all of ten minutes and I felt as if a huge weight had been lifted form my shoulders. I also suddenly realized I really needed to pee. I rushed through all the congratulatory hugs and made my way to the lady's room. When I came out of my stall, Dr. Mitchell was washing her hands.
"Dr. Mitchell, Can I ask you something." My voice trembled a little when I thought about how to ask..."
"Please call me Mary." She touched my arm with her hand "and yes, you can ask me anything."
"That thing about getting your permission." I didn't finish the question.
"Oh that. Well, it normally takes three months, but you healed very quickly and from when I saw you last week, I'd say you were good to go. If you've been keeping up with the dilations, I think you're ok to explore." She grinned a big grin. "Tommy, too, if that's what you want."
I could feel myself blush. "That obvious?" I looked at my feet.
"Young lady, you have got it bad," Mary laughed a soft laugh. "He's a lucky man."
"I think I'm the lucky one." I answered.
"It's the same with me and Anne. That's what makes it special." She hugged me and we turned and walked out of the bathroom together.
Chapter 7
My dad's friend, my Lawyer who I now called Uncle George had invited us all to his house after the hearing. He had put a brisket on the smoker early this morning and swore that it would be the most delicious thing any of us ever tasted. That and some spicy sausage and home-made potato salad and cole slaw, Cold beer for the grown-ups and he guaranteed we'd all feel like we were in Texas.
I had opted to ride with Tommy and my mom and dad had not objected. I slid over next to him on the bench seat of his truck and leaned my head on his shoulder as he drove. His hand wandered up and down my leg and I wasn't about to protest. We didn't talk much, just enjoyed being close to each other.
We pulled up to George's house and Tommy stopped the truck. I lifted my head and look at him. Our eyes locked. I closed mine and leaned slightly forward. Tommy met my advance and our lips touched. It was soft and sweet and powerful. I wanted that moment to last forever. I could feel the wetness in my crotch as I my hand found the back of Tommy's head and pulled him closer. The kiss became more and more passionate and after a few moments, we broke.
"Wow." I sighed.
"That was wonderful. I've wanted to do that for so long, I just..." Tommy grinned a wide grin as his voice faded.
"Really?" I asked, "do Tell."
"The day you got out of the hospital. The day you gave me that hug and said you were glad I was there. I knew then. I just didn't know what to do about it. This is all so confusing."
"Same here. It just took me until today to realize it. Anne has been trying to help me get a clue, but I was too dense to understand what she meant."
Tommy chuckled. "I knew I liked Anne. So, her and the doctor, a thing?"
"Big time", I smiled. Pausing, "What about you and me?" I asked softly.
"Yeah, I think we are. Are you OK with that?"
I grabbed him and pulled his mouth to mine and kissed him as hard as I could. My dad's knocking on the window broke the moment. I guess that's what dads are for, right?
Tommy rolled down the window. "You guys coming inside or are you just going to stay out here and, um, go hungry? The BBQ smells pretty amazing and, Tommy, you and I need to have a little talk."
"Yes sir." Tommy blushed.
"I don't now daddy, let me think about it." I smirked in my most sarcastic tone.
We all laughed, and Tommy rolled up the window and opened the door. We both climbed out the driver's side of the truck.
The BBQ was truly amazing as was everything else. Tommy and I had to settle for Tea, which was very sweet, evidently a Texas thing. Uncle George and his wife Sue were both from Texas and had thick accents to prove it. They were wonderful people and had twin daughters, Debra and Deidre, the same age as me and Tommy. It was an interesting experience for me to be on this side of the girl chatter at a party.
They knew about what had happened to me and were genuinely interested in learning more about it. Things like, 'Had I touched it yet?', 'What did it feel like?' and about Tommy, 'Was he a good kisser?' You know, all the important stuff. Dealing with the questions they asked and the way they reacted took some practice. It was all so much more 'expressive' and frankly, 'invasive' than what I was used to. I had always been more of a Dragnet, just the facts, kind of person and the challenge of keeping up with their emotive reactions was almost too much.
After a while, I think they sensed that I was losing my ability to keep up. We were all laughing about something silly when Tommy walked up. They both gave me big hugs and released me to the safety of my boyfriend.
"Boyfriend." They had said it in a very exaggerated, teasing unison, but I knew it was all in fun and besides, I liked the way it sounded.
"You looked like you need a break." He grinned.
"For you, always." I smiled and kissed him sweetly.
We held hands as we walked out onto the patio where Mary was fielding a barrage of questions about the technical issues surrounding what had happened to me, and the procedure she had used to fix it. It was a fascinating topic and Mary was alive in her element. It had been too perfect a day for me to sit through the inquisition I knew would ultimately turn to me, so I leaned over and asked my dad if it was OK if Tommy took me home.
He understood and stood up to give me a hug and kiss. I leaned over and kissed my mom on the forehead and said my goodbyes to everybody else, hugging Anne as tight as I could and nodding and winking at Mary while I did. Abby had already left. I thanked George and Sue for everything and said goodbye to the twins. The three of us giggled about nothing as I grabbed Tommy's hand and turned to go.
Tommy opened the door to his truck, and I slid in to my spot in the center of the front seat and waited eagerly for him to climb in next to me. "Thanks again for rescuing me" I smiled.
"Prince Thomas Ryan at your service, M' lady." He said in the worst British accent I had ever heard.
I kissed him and said, "Let's go home."
He started the truck and pulled away from the curb. I kicked my sandals off and curled my feet underneath me, leaning even closer to Tommy. The drive home was about an hour and a half. It was a beautiful night without a cloud in the sky.
We drove as we had on the way from the courthouse, my head on his shoulder and his right hand roaming up and down my leg. I thought about what Mary had told me and let my mind wander, wondering what it would be like with Tommy. A hundred fantasies filled my thoughts as Tommy's hand gently moved up the inside of my thigh. I heard myself let out an audible sigh.
"What was that baby?" Tommy asked. His hand stopped.
"Um, nothing really, I was just thinking."
"What about?"
I looked at his face in the light of the dashboard and wondered if he knew how handsome he was. I had never found a man attractive before Tommy, but he was about the most beautiful thing I had ever seen right now.
"Just you and me. Where this is going to go? That kind of stuff. I'm just worrying about things that will probably never happen."
"You know I'm not going anywhere without you, right? I mean I'll be playing for State this year, so we'll be there together." He moved his hand to my knee and agave it a gentle squeeze.
"I know. I'm looking forward to that." I hugged his arm and rested my head on his shoulder once again.
We rode in silence for a while as an odd tension started to fill the space between us. "Tommy, is there something else, you need to talk about?"
"Yeah, but I better pull over first." I could hear a sadness in his voice as he pulled to the shoulder of the highway. He turned the truck off and turned sideways to face me. I could sense the pain and reached out to take his hands in mine.
I was in a near panic waiting for the perfect day to be ruined by what he had to tell me.
"It's just that, well, I told you a little about my sister, right?"
"Yes." I gently squeezed his hands.
"Well, what I didn't tell you is that my parents really went off the deep end with her and they won't talk about her anymore. They won't even acknowledge that she's still alive. They tell people she died, Charly, that she died. I haven't seen Sarah in over ten years." He started to cry.
"Oh, Tommy, I am so sorry. That must be horrible to have to deal with." It hit me like I had been punched in the face. "Do they know about what happened to me? Is that why you're doing so much to help me? Is that why..."
"Yes, No, I mean, that's how it started anyway. Then I started having these feelings and well. Charly, they told me if I came here to be with you today, to not come home. That I would be just as dead to them as Sarah is.
"They are just so wrong about this whole thing. I had to choose you. I had to choose Sarah. I had to. Do you understand?" He lowered his head looking at the seat between us, sobbing quietly.
I put my arms around Tommy and just held him, letting him cry until there were no more tears, thinking about what he had given up, thinking about what it meant. Wondering if Sarah knew what an amazing man her little brother was and wondering if I could ever make up for the sacrifices he had made today for Sarah, and for me.
We sat next to each other for a long time not speaking, just holding each other and staring down the highway.
A shooting star streaked across the sky in front of us.
"Did you make a wish?" he asked me quietly.
"Yes, I did. You?"
"Yes."
It was quiet again, but a new kind of tension screamed in the cab of the truck.
"We can share, if you want to." I said, almost in a whisper.
"I'd like that." His eyes found mine again.
I kissed his cheek.
We both knew we weren't talking about wishes.
Tommy started the truck and took the next exit, turned down a side road and pulled the truck into an open field in the middle of nowhere. He opened the door and slid out of the truck, turning around to help me down. The cool grass felt good on my bare feet. He reached behind the seat and produced some blankets which we hurriedly spread on the ground next to the truck.
I lay down next to Tommy and we began kissing passionately under the starry night. His hands slid down my body finding their way under my dress and pulling it over my head while I worked feverishly to remove his shirt and started undoing his belt and then his pants. Tommy kicked his boots off and pulled his pants over his feet before turning his attention back to me.
His chest was smooth and muscular, and he rocked a serious six pack. I started kissing his chest and sliding my hands over his torso while he slipped his hand behind my back and released the clasp on my bra.
I let him roll me over on my back and examine my body while I slipped off my panties of and tossed them on top of my dress.
