He kissed her, a tender, lingering kiss that left her weak.
"Thank you," he whispered. "For everything."
She turned and walked to the door, picking up her purse on her way out. As she turned to close the door behind her, she could see him, still standing by the rumpled bed, wearing only his flannel pants, his hands hanging at his sides. She paused, unable to move for a moment as she memorized him one last time. The she pulled the door shut and leaned against it, blinking away the tears that streamed down her cheeks.
"Goodbye, Sam. Goodbye..." she whispered, forcing herself to walk to the elevator and push the button for 1, thankful she didn't have to wait long for it to arrive. The sooner she got out of here, the better.
When she got to her car, she looked up at his window and could see him silhouetted, watching her leave.
She quickly sped out of the parking lot and headed for home, back to the life that waited for her.
