'I think it's going just fine.' They shared a little kiss while no-one was watching but yet again, the moment was broken by that squeal. Standing on a chair, clearly a little drunk, Britney hit a spoon against a glass and cried.
'Let's play "Never Have I Ever?!"
The muffled sounds of agreement were perhaps not the rousing consensus she had hoped for, but everyone seemed up for it and everyone sat down wherever they could and poured themselves a drink. With absolutely no space, Taylor sat on the arm of the couch and Amy perched on her lap, the blonde girl wrapping her arms around her waist, waiting for the game to start. Britney prodded at Taylor's friend Lucy who started, slightly unsure of herself.
'OK... erm, never have I ever... had sex in a public place.'
Everyone looked edgily round the room, trying to catch someone out. Dan drank. Some girl Hannah drank, giggling at her friends. Amy leaned her head back to look at Taylor, both of them grinning, and they both raised their glasses and drank. Lucy pointed and laughed at the couple who were both a dark shade of red and the turn moved on. It was Eliza's turn next.
'Never have I ever drunk so much I threw up.'
Many more people drank here, including Amy who hiccupped as she took a sip of her vodka and coke. She was something of a lightweight. Taylor gave her a squeeze when no-one was looking, much to her delight. Ted, Taylor's gay friend from high school and one of only two guys here, went next.
'OK, never have I ever touched one of those disgusting vaginas! And your own doesn't count ladies!'
Amy obviously drank, just like Taylor, but she couldn't help noticing apart from Dan, how many of the other women drank. Amy didn't know all of Taylor's friends that well but she couldn't help noticing how many were lesbians or had at least fooled around with women. Had they fooled around with Taylor? She was being silly and jealous.
Maybe she should have realised, she knew what Taylor's past was like but seeing all these potential exes and flings in one room suddenly put her on edge. When Taylor offered to refill her glass, she answered a little too quickly and curtly. Before anything could be said though, it was Dan's turn.
'Haha OK, Ted, you wanna catch me out like that? Never have I ever kissed a guy!'
Amy sat there observing when she felt Taylor's arms unwrap from around her to take a sip of her beer. She turned to face her with incredulity. Seeing the look of shock on her face, Taylor just grinned back but Amy wasn't having any of it. The previous round had thrown her and now she was all over the place with confusion.
'You kissed a guy?' Taylor just nodded and shrugged non-committedly, but Amy pressed on. 'Who the fuck did you kiss? And when?' Again Taylor didn't say anything but Amy saw her eyes dart just to the left of them where Dan was sitting. Amy whirled her head round and caught his eye. He had clearly overheard and gave Amy a queasy and uneasy smile. Taylor drew the attention away from Dan and back to her.
'Amy, it was a long time ago, way before I met you. You know I experimented a lot before college.' True, Taylor had never hid the fact that she had tried nearly everything she could in the past but somehow she had thought that didn't apply to guys. They had shared many a joke about how most women were idiots for missing out on the pleasure of other women, and how stupid they were for going for... well some of the words had been cruel and stereotypical about men, misandry basically.
The idea of Taylor kissing a man was really no big deal, at least it shouldn't be. Why did it bother her so much? For what felt like the millionth time tonight, Britney interrupted her thought process once again. By now she wanted to strangle her.
'You've never kissed a guy Amy? NEVER! NO. WAY.' Why did she have to speak so loud?
'We gotta change that! Dan will kiss you, won't he?' Fuck, could she not just let it go? She sighed, looking exasperatedly over at Dan. Where a minute ago, he had tried to seem apologetic now he had an unmistakeable look of opportunism in his eyes. He didn't want to offend Amy earlier but he wasn't going to say no to a kiss, with his girlfriend's permission on top of that. Instead she looked to Taylor for help but she just shrugged again.
'It's only Dan. It's not a big deal. Hey and there we're even!'
Taylor laughed as she said it, to her it all seemed frivolous fun. She hadn't cottoned on yet that perhaps Amy didn't want to kiss a guy, that she was being pressured and that her kissing Dan was a big deal to her. She couldn't help it, Amy supposed. She was here a little drunk surrounded by all her friends and not really paying attention. Why would someone she kissed when she fourteen matter now? And if it was anyone else, Amy wouldn't mind. But it was a guy.
Amy had always seen Taylor as this strong lesbian character who didn't need men and who had helped her onto a similar path. To think of her in the arms of some guy... even a nice guy like Dan, well it hurt her preconceptions of the girl she was in love with. The rest of the room had overheard and were all joining in now, cheering.
'Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!'
Dan looked at her with a look like, 'what can you do?', even though he could get out of it if he wanted. Just wanting it to be over with, she leaned in and gave Dan a quick peck on the lips. Immediately, she felt his stubble on her softer skin and she drew away as quick as she could, glad that it was over and done with.
The room cheered and let it go. It was nothing like kissing Taylor and she had no idea why Taylor would want to kiss that. She excused herself, saying she needed the bathroom, halfway out of her seat and across the room when Lucy called out.
'Oh but it's your go, Amy. Just say something random quickly.' Looking back now, it was stupid to say the first thing that came into her head but Amy just wanted to escape to the toilet and breathe for a second. She spat it out and turned to go.
'Never have I ever fucked a man.' But just as she was turning to go into the bathroom, she saw Taylor lift her drink out of the corner of her eye, about to take a drink. Not caring about all the people she barely knew in the moon, she spun on the spot and glared at her.
'What the fuck Taylor!?!' The whole room went from noisy to eerily quiet as this dramatic outburst. Only Taylor didn't react straight away, she just downed her beer unapologetically and stood up, marching over to Amy and taking her softly by firmly by the arm and leading her into their bedroom. Amy stumbled as they took the few steps, all the alcohol going to her head.
She knew she'd had far too much to drink, she should have known her limits. Taylor shut the door behind them and sat on the bed, smiling politely and indicating that Amy should come join her but Amy stood there, arms folded like a petulant child, pouting. Taylor sighed and asked straight up.
'What the hell, Amy? Come on. I love you. You know that. Why does me experimenting with Dan about five years ago bother you so much?'
Amy ignored the loving tone and spat right back.
'So what are you bisexual now?'
Taylor was slightly annoyed by Amy ignoring what she'd just said but continued on.
'No. I told you. I'm 100% gay. But why would it bother you if I was?' Again, Amy only picked up on the last bit, whatever was convenient.
'Oh so you are bi! Are you sleeping with Dan?' Taylor grew less patient now and stood up.
'Amy, are you listening to anything I'm fucking saying? It was five years ago. I'm not into guys. And I love you. What don't you get?'
Amy knew she was over-reacting, that she was being absurd and that she needed to slow down on the drinks. Tears rolled down her face and on seeing that, Taylor's tone immediately softened again and she pulled her closer into a hug. Amy sniffed and wiped away her tears.
'I'm sorry. I know I'm being stupid. Just... why didn't you tell me?'
'I dunno. It was so long ago, I genuinely forgot. I'm sorry, pet.'
'Did... did you enjoy it?'
'No!' Taylor immediately protested. 'He has a really small cock.' To both of their surprise, they heard the whole room outside snicker quietly. The walls really were thin, but had they all overheard everything? Amy replied in a more hushed tone.
'But if he'd had a bigger cock, you might have enjoyed...'
'Oh for fucks sake Amy! I'm not into Dan or any guys. Just let it go!' Amy sniffed and nodded and tried to put it to the back of her mind. Taylor apologised for snapping and hugged her again. When they broke the embrace, Amy tried to smile at her as if she had put it all behind her and Taylor took her hand, leading them both out of the bedroom.
When they got out it was obvious everyone had been looking. All their eyes were fixed on the door as it slammed open, everyone apart from Dan and Britney that is, who were both looking at their feet, Dan looking humbled, Britney with a furious look on her face of embarrassment on her boyfriend's behalf. Taylor gave everyone a cheeky wink as she stepped back in.
'What you all looking at? Let's do some shots everyone, I'm gonna call some cabs and we'll be at the club soon.'
Everyone cheered and Taylor went over to their small kitchenette, pouring shots of vodka for anyone who wanted one. Taylor ordered some taxis to take them into town and the edgy atmosphere of a few minutes ago, everyone was having a good time, even Dan who was clearly trying to drink away his embarrassment while not making eye contact with any of the straight girls.
Everyone was having a good time that is, apart from Amy. She sat alone, making idle chit chat when anyone passed her but she couldn't get the weight off her chest. She was still hurt that Taylor had slept with a guy, a close friend and hadn't told her. Amy had only recently come to terms with her sexuality. For her, it had been difficult realising she was a lesbian in the first place.
In her mind, in the last few months that had only just settled and a huge part of that reassurance and settling was Taylor, who had been a proud lesbian for what seemed like forever. To find out that her sexuality could be so fluid, it rocked Amy's foundations in ways she didn't quite know why. A bit too drunk, Lucy giggled and asked.
'So Amy, did you like your kiss? Are you bi now? Did Dan turn you?' Amy replied instantly, speaking louder than she usually would without really thinking about it.
'Yeah I think I might be now. I think I might want to explore guys now.'
While everyone laughed, Amy flicked her head to see if Taylor had noticed. She was engrossed in conversation with Eliza but did Amy see the slight pricking of her ears. She hoped so. For God's sake, pull yourself together, woman, stop trying to make her jealous. She apologised for something she did years ago, let it go.
But when she took a sip of her drink again, her mind clouded over again and the dark thoughts came swimming back. By the time, the taxis arrived she had started doing shots again and she could barely clamber in without Taylor helping her in by the arm.
They pulled up at the club around eleven. Taylor dutifully paid then took Amy by the arm smiling, and walked them both up to the bouncer. Amy knew the one on tonight and gave him a hateful glare. He was well known to be homophobic, denying Ted entry in the past, and if they hadn't just looked like two friends arm in arm, he surely wouldn't have let them in. Still despite this, the whole group made it in, even Ted who managed to escape recognition and they all piled onto the dance floor.
In truth Amy hated clubs. The music was loud, she couldn't hear anything, her concept of dance was far different to the bump and grind of most of the idiots here and men would grope her from every angle. Still, she was alright if Taylor was with her normally. In fact, they had fashioned a little game with the pervy guys in clubs.
Amy would do a little solo dance in the middle of the floor and when some guy would come in all handsy, just as he was about to make contact, Taylor with her strong physique would barge him out the way, take Amy and kiss her, stunning everyone around them. It brought out the exhibitionism in both of them. And tonight was no different.
Amy found herself alone in the middle of the floor. Taylor caught her eye and smiled mischievously, as Amy began to drop down low, winding her waists and pressing her ass firmly out with her hands delicately stroking her thighs. Fuck, even just watching it was getting Taylor squirming and wet. If she hadn't been hosting all her friends, she would take Amy to the bathroom right now and eat her in one of the cubicles. She was no stranger to that in this club.
A wiry, geeky looking guy in glasses had approached Amy who seemed to be beckoning him over with her ass. Poor guy, she thought to herself. But then serves him right for even thinking he had a chance with a hotty like Amy, her Amy. He wasn't getting anywhere near her pet. When he placed his hands on her waist and began to try and grind subtly behind her, it was time for Taylor to move in.
She pushed her way through the crowd subtly and tapped the guy on the shoulder, clearing her throat loudly. But in the bass of the music, he did not hear.
What was worse was Amy. Rather than playing the game, she was vehemently grinding into the back of him now, oblivious to Taylor's presence. When she spun on her heels, and pulled this nerd in by his lapels, she glimpsed Taylor for the first time. Her face was steely, her gaze iced over but she did not break eye contact with her stunned girlfriend as she pulled him in and clumsily kissed him on the lips.
Her eyes were still open. He clearly couldn't believe his luck and he poured everything he had back into this sloppy, pathetic kiss. She had had enough of this little show of defiance and red mist came to her. Before she knew it, the kid was on the floor. She had shoved him so hard that the kiss had broken and he had gone reeling, falling back onto his ass. She would have snickered if she wasn't so angry. He stood up and mouthed something to her. The bass clouded most of his words, but he seemed to stutter in a half rage.
'Don't think I... hit... cos you're a...'
Taylor settled the matter before he had even finished, ending this fight for him, doing what she had only done a few times with uppity girls in volleyball matches, curling her fingers into a fist and arcing it up, catching him square in the cheek with all her rage and frustration at Amy. She was screaming as Taylor threw the punch but Taylor herself was strangely calm, as if it had happened to someone else.
She barely noticed that the boy hadn't got up yet, and when she felt a strong bouncer's arms grab her and force her out, his rough touch didn't grate on her numb body. In about five seconds flat, she had been thrown out onto the street and the door was shut behind her. The street was empty. Her head was spinning from the shots but at least it was quiet out here, apart from the distant throb of the music indoors.
She sank to the floor, slumped against the wall. Emotion had just hit when she felt a single tear trickle down her cheek. She sniffed and wiped it away, swearing loudly. Fuck, what had she done?
Patting her pockets, she realised her purse and keys were in her jacket, which she had left in the cloakroom. Double fuck. They wouldn't let her go in and get it. She would have to walk back now. That would probably take an hour in the cold. Her nose was snivelling already, unable to control the tears. Just as she stood up to make the long journey home, the door slammed open again and another poor soul was ejected out onto the cold, hard sidewalk.
'If you're gonna be starting fights, you can get the fuck out.'
Taylor realised with a jolt that it was her victim. As he was tossed out, she could see his glasses were slightly wobbly from her fist and his turned out, nice white cotton shirt had blood stains off from his leaking nose. Boy, she was stronger than she realised. Especially when Amy was involved. Amy. Just as her tears threatened to cascade down even more thinking of her, incredibly she heard her voice and hope fluttered in her heart. She had come out to get her.
'Please, it's not his fault, let him stay, he didn't do anything.'
Her words were slurred, drunker than Taylor had ever seen her before but there was no mistaking who she had come out to save. And it wasn't her. The bouncers were clearly not fond of arguing and as Amy staggered out in her high heels to tend to the guy on the floor, they shut the door behind her. As the door swung shut, Taylor was revealed lurking in the shadows behind it, mascara running down her face.
Amy dabbed at the guy's bleeding nose but when she turned away to fetch a tissue from her bag, she saw Taylor out of the corner of her eye and looked up shocked. They both let their gaze hang there for just a minute, Amy's face in a look of surprise and guilt and Taylor, normally the dominant and in control one, hunched there shaking and crying but still looking at her with such a look of hurt and anger.
Vulnerable was normally not a word that described Taylor very well but there was nothing else Amy could say about her. She had done this, to the person she loved. An apology was swimming to her lips, but Taylor spoke first and what she said sent a chill through Amy's heart.
'It's over. It's over, you whore. I never want to see you again.' Her voice was high pitched and breaking as both girls were sobbing now. Suddenly Amy seemed sober and understood what a bitch she had been being. Of course, Taylor didn't want to see her again. She didn't expect what she said next though.
'You owe everything to me. You were just a dumb virgin before me, I made you what you were. You're pathetic. Acting like you're so submissive, you just need someone else to take control of your fucked up life Amy. You're a mess and I'm the one you turned to to sort it out. Well I'm not going to be your fucking agony aunt anymore. Go back to England, or keep the apartment, I don't want to be there and I don't want to be with you. I'm worth a million of you, you fucking hear me. I own you!'
Every word that tripped off her tongue Taylor regretted instantly. She knew she had gone too far, she didn't mean any of it, her love still burned strong or she wouldn't be hurting so much. But all she wanted to do now was hurt Amy like she'd hurt her but she'd done that about five seconds into her speech of vitriol, but still she continued to pour out the irrational hate.
Amy wasn't weeping anymore. She looked completely cold and motionless, taking it all in, every bullet Taylor spat out and just took it. It was her nature as a submissive, Taylor supposed. Except now, Amy was feeling a defiance she had never felt before. She got to her feet and stood there indignant, not flinching under Taylor's gaze. She offered the boy to his feet, who in truth Taylor had completely forgotten about, and said the only thing that could probably hurt Taylor more at this stage of the night.
'Come on... ', she paused as she obviously didn't know his name. 'Let's go fuck!'
Her words were ice-cool but each one was laced with venom. Taylor couldn't take it anymore. She picked herself up and paced away as fast as she could, beginning the long walk back, even though she had no key. She didn't know where to go. Amy watched her go with a tinge of sadness but mostly adrenaline and rage, rage at the cruel things Taylor had said, were flowing through her body.
She felt a squeeze in her hand and realised this guy was still holding her hand. Were they actually going to fuck? He had been punched, his glasses were broken and there was blood everywhere yet his tongue was still hanging out and a lascivious look on his face. Now he was leading her to what seemed like a dark alley.
