"Yeah, it does. Can't imagine why." Rebecca replied.
We both laughed and got dressed as best we could, considering we ripped the buttons out of each other's blouses. I got back to my quarters around twenty-two hundred and took a long cold shower. My body was covered with fingernail scratches and hickeys, but I had never felt more fulfilled, nor more loved and desired in my entire life. I crawled into bed just before midnight and slept like a baby. When I woke in the morning, I stumbled to my front door to get the paper. I couldn't believe how stiff and soar I was. For an active soldier in the U.S. Army to be this out of shape was sinful. Only problem was, I wasn't out of shape at all; the lust of the General had just worn me down. I opened the door and found the most beautiful arrangement of roses I'd ever seen in my life sitting on my front porch. I opened the card and read it:
"Thank you for the most fulfilling and passionate night of my life, Major Grant. All my love and lust, General Lee."
I did a double take on Major Grant. Major Grant? I'm Captain Grant. You of all people should know that considering some of the orders you were issuing me last night, I thought. Then I caught the P.S. just below her signature and it read:
"Look in the box."
I looked down beside the flowers and sure enough, there was a small box that looked like a necklace case. I picked it up and opened it. Inside were two small gold oak leaves; the uniform rank insignia of a U.S. Army Major. A powerful chill passed through my body as tears welled in my eyes. I then spotted a business card in the lid of the case and took it out. It read:
"Official presentation and documentation of promotion today at thirteen hundred hours for now Major Miranda Grant; over please."
I flipped the card over and read:
"As soon as you make General, we have a date in Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia for a Lee and Grant rematch."
There was a heart drawn in bright pink ink with a smiling face inside it and the initials R.E. Lee. Tears were now streaming down my cheeks, my heart was thundering and I was having trouble catching my breath. For the first time in my life, I actually felt not only like a woman, but like a lady:
Somebody had sent me flowers.
