"Don't go by the main roads!" he said to the young man, who drove off through the back alley. Lockhart said. He himself ran to the parking lot next door and got into an old brown car and drove off. He did not notice that Annie was still in the parking lot, watching him.
Within five minutes, three police cruisers pulled up to the pharmacy, one going into the back alley. Sergeant Micah Rudistan and Sr. Patrolmen Morton and Hicks got out, finding the doors locked. Patrolman Johnson radioed from the car in the alley that there was no movement.
"Damn, I think we're too late." said Rudistan, his voice jovial despite the failure to capture Lockhart. "I'll call the Commander and give him the bad news." Just then he noticed a young woman coming up to him, calling out to get his attention...
