To tell the truth, if Adrienne had wanted to sneak out, she could have done so when her overzealous cell phone alarm went off at 8 AM. Maybe it was just the numbing comfort of Daphne's bed, but she had no desire to leave - and nothing to go home to, really. "Why don't we hang out today? We can watch a movie, go out to the mall, maybe get some ice cream - it'll be fun. I'll even help you with chores."
Sophia cast a skeptical eye at Adrienne. "You sure you want to get involved with us?"
"I know that Daphne needs her Rose," said Adrienne. "And I know that Sophia needs a good fucking on the reg from her good friend Adrienne. And I know that in this town, I need a family, or something like that."
Adrienne stepped forward and gave Sophia a short but lewd kiss, running her tongue along the inside of Sophia's cheek. She separated from the other woman with a naughty smile. Sophia looked totally disarmed. "Is... is that how you treat your family?"
"I guess I must be some kind of deviant."
Daphne came in, and Adrienne greeted her with a peck on the cheeks. The three sat down to a friendly meal. In her mind, Adrienne was mulling over whether she could really be two different women to two different lovers. But it was better than being nobody to no one. And if it lead to more nights like the last one... well, why not be the next Rose?

Anonymousabout 6 years agoI liked the story, but so frequently I've found stories that were great where other commenter’s implore the author to write a part 2, and invariably the sequel is just...lousy.
The characters who were so new and distinct in the original become familiar and staid, and just abused as the writer tries to wring something out of them that has a hint of the first story – but it either turns into more of the same plotline or something so out of what you believe the character of the story to be that it jars your delight.

KumquatMayabout 8 years agoI'm simply stunned by the superbly crafted storyline, how incredibly vivid Rose-Adrienne is/are, & Dapbne & Sophia each unique & exquiste. Great kinky plot with amazing detail & depth for such a short story. And the incredibly complex exploration of the physical & psychological ghosts of grief. This is stellar prose. Thank you for this wonderful story.

Anonymousover 8 years agodo a part 2 to resolve the issues not resolved in this part--Adrienne's search for deeper relationships, Sophia's enabling, and Daphne's grief. You've created a good set of characters and I want them to hang around a little longer.
germanchocolate4uabout 9 years agoThe Next Rose is the bomb! I read it and then re-read it again, it's just that good. The premise is deliciously deviant. I love it when Sophia asks "Adrienne-Rose" if she fucks better than her sister and "Adrienne-Rose" says yes but she makes love better than you - frigging classic:) Aah, the webs we weave but looks like the spiders got caught by the fly ass "Adrienne-Rose."
