The Proposal Ch. 08

Good as Jocelyn's word, the edited vid appears in Rick's inbox at twelve minutes after ten the next morning. The vid is seventeen minutes long and he's very pleased with the edit. He appears calm, articulate, and knowledgeable, very much a man at peace with himself. He returns the ping with a simple 'Thank you' attached, knowing that Jocelyn will understand what he means. Twenty minutes later another ping arrives from AIN with a link to the vid on the AIN site, which he immediately forwards to Todd, Giselle, and Charlie.

Rick spends the rest of the day trying to work, but accomplishes little as he obsessively watches the sales numbers begin to rise at Immersion Playground. The increase is slow at first, just a few dozen in the first hour, but after lunch the sales numbers began to tick up much faster. The Proposal is finally getting some traction.

Two weeks later, Todd and Charlie join Giselle and Rick for a celebratory dinner. It hasn't been all smooth sailing, but the interview with AIN was the just the start. Soon afterwards, Rick was being requested for interviews with mainstream media outlets. He has had to fight every step of the way to prevent The Proposal from being pigeonholed with other pornographic titles, but his quiet instance that each person that interviews him experience their immersion first, or at least speak to someone they trust who has, allowed him to, thus far, prevent their immersion from getting lost in the sea of other adult titles.

"Todd... do you remember the deal we made way back at the beginning of all of this?" Rick asks.

"What deal is that?" Todd asks, confused.

"The deal where you wouldn't let us pay you to setup the store," Giselle says.

"Oh, yeah. That. Why?"

Rick smiles broadly. "I have something to show you," he says, sending Charlie and Todd a link to the latest review before leaning back in his chair. He'd had an net interview with Duncan, the reviewer, after he'd experienced the immersion, and Duncan had sent him an advanced copy of the review what would be hitting the net in the next couple of days.

It's not often that a person is around to witness a fundamental change in an industry. The vid industry has been around nearly two hundred years and there has, in my mind, been only three fundamental events in this entire two-hundred-year history. The first was the invention of motion pictures in the late 1800's, the precursor to our modern vid releases. The second was adding sound to movies with Don Jaun in 1926. The third, and until now, final fundamental change was the addition of color with the movie Becky Sharp in 1935. All these changes revolutionized the vid industry. Now there is a fourth revolution underway, a transformation that will surpass any of the others in the impact it will have on the industry. This revolution is immersion technology.

Having just experienced The Proposal by Immersion Playground, I can say I stand in awe of what this means. For those that have never experienced an immersion, The Proposal is a one hundred twenty four minute immersion of a couple enjoying a romantic picnic on a secluded beach, but, and this is the key to the entire immersion experience, you can taste the food, smell the salt air, and most importantly, you can feel the emotions of Rick and Giselle.

This immersion is a two-hour period in the life of a couple, unedited and real, when Rick proposes to Giselle. The people are real, the situation is real, and the stakes are real. This is a chance to step into the experience of a loving couple at the most pivotal point in their lives. My wife and I experienced this immersion together and emerged from it with our commitment to each other renewed and strengthened. The Proposal can't be reviewed, not in the traditional sense, as this is real life. There are no editing decisions to complain about, no plot points to nitpick. This immersion isn't entertainment, it's life, and love, captured in all its glory.

The Proposal is perhaps the first of an entirely new genre, a blurring of the line between entertainment and real life. It's so different that Immersion Playground has used a new term to describe their immersion, 'hedonistic.' I support this idea as all other words that I have heard used to describe the immersion, such as entertainment, pornographic, or adult, all have connotations that are unfavorable and inappropriate. The Proposal is about the pleasures that man and woman share, but at a much deeper, more profound, level than just physical contact. Those that have found their partner, their soul mate, know of the peace, the pleasure, of simply being with the person you love. That feeling of warmth and contentment, that glow that comes from the inside, it's all captured in this immersion.

If you've never experienced an immersion, this is the one to experience. If you have not been chipped, this immersion is a reason to do so. I cannot overstate how profoundly I believe this immersion will change the world, not for what it is, but for what it shows is possible. I believe this will be as fundamental change to our world as the motion picture was, as radio was... as the Gutenberg press was.

This immersion is unrated, but it is suitable only for adults because of the emotional and sexual content.

"This is from Release! magazine?" Todd asks, his voice giving away that he understands the implications.

"That's correct," Rick says, his smile growing even wider.

"You know what this means, don't you?" Todd asks.

"What?" Charlie asks. It's a great review, but the near awe in Todd's voice makes her realize she is missing something... something important.

"It means, Charlie, that I need to talk to Todd about that job," Rick says.
