The Savage Garden

It started out as darkness, then the feeling of anger spread. Red misted her eyes and she smelled blood… fear… pain. Jade awoke in a cold sweat, nearly banging her head on the bunk above her. She sat for a moment, breathing deeply and listening to the near silent house. Sensing no danger, she lay back down and sighed. The floppy eared brown dog at her side looked up for a moment, and then calmly went back to sleep. The dreams were becoming more frequent. Jade hopped out of bed and pulled on her boyfriend’s tool T-shirt and a pair of faded jeans. “Time for a run R.D.” she yelled as she headed for the door, pulling her one star sneakers on as she walked. The dog lunged out of bed, beating her to the door and sitting in front of his leash with a wildly wagging tail. “Judging by the X-rays we took, your wisdom teeth seem to be growing back into your jaw line. And your incisors are growing down. This is a very unusual case and I think that you should consult an oral surgeon. If you would like you can call me back during office hours and I will give you a referral…”

Jade hung up the phone and stepped naked into the cold shower. The chilly water hitting her body felt good. It calmed her nerves, even if it couldn’t stop the thoughts that were buzzing in her head. The dreams, her teeth, the anger that flashed within her throughout the day. She tried to make sense of it all, but it wouldn’t come together. Giving up, she jumped out of the shower and curled up in bed. Picking up her copy of Interview with the Vampire, she settled down to read.

Sean arrived around five and found Jade sleeping with the book on her chest. She was breathing heavily, struggling with her sleep. As he touched her shoulder she jumped up in bed, her arms reaching out for him immediately to pull him to the floor. Pinning him she began to dig her nails into his wrists.
