The Silent Killer Ch. 03byWriterInProgress©
Devyn had spent at least three days in the cell. People had brought her food and drink, and she'd been allowed to use the bathroom four times a day. Her muscles were still killing her. She hadn't slept any more than 4-5 hours a day since being put in the cell. She was sick and tired of being cooped up. She sat on the small cot in the cell with her knees brought to her chest.
"You haven't been eating the food my packs been bringing to you." Miles' voice was full of annoyance as he spoke.
"And?" Devyn's voice was scratchy, and, for the first time, she realized she was parched.
Miles opened the cell and waited for Devyn to get up from the cot. When she didn't move, he grabbed her upper arm in a tight grasp and hauled her up from the cot himself. Devyn let out a squeak of surprise and cursed at the pain that shot through her body.
"Let go of me!" Devyn shrieked as Miles hauled her up the stairs and into his office.
"Sit there and be quiet!" Miles shouted at Devyn as he shoved her down into a chair in front of his desk.
"Your boss has been contacted. After the last three days of investigating, I'm off the hook. You, however, my dear, aren't. You aren't leaving this property for a while." Miles sat down in the chair behind his desk and glared across at Devyn.
Devyn glared back at him and ran her fingers through her limp, oily hair. She crossed her arms over her chest, and sank down in the seat. To her surprise, she wasn't all that upset about having to stay. She tried to reason with herself about what might happen, but it didn't matter.
"You'll be staying in my room. No arguments. No running. No rule-breaking. The first time I catch you with even a hair out of fucking line, Devyn, I'll lock you back up down in the holding cell." Miles' voice put every hair on Devyn's body at attention.
"I just..." Devyn sighed as her voice broke. She could barely speak because of how hoarse her throat was. "I just want a shower and a bed."
Miles picked up his phone and pressed a button. "Jeff, come get her and take her up to my room, please." He hung up and watched Devyn for a minute.
A few minutes later a big man, though not as big as Miles, came into the room and grabbed Devyn's upper arm drawing yet another squeak from her.
"Not so rough, Jeffrey. Take her up to my rooms and keep guards outside the door as well as down below my window. Guards should be in position at all times when I'm not up there, and at least one guard at both locations when I am there. She's requested a shower. Make sure she gets a change of clothes."
Miles and Jeffrey exchanged a nod and Miles watched as Devyn was lead out of his office.
Miles didn't really want to let the girl out of his sight. As he watched her go, he felt his emotions go haywire. He decided to finish up the work he'd started so he could get back up to his room. He didn't like that he had to keep guards standing at the window and door of his room. It was discouraging.
Eventually she'd get it. She'd have to. She'd be with him for the rest of her life.
The first thing Devyn did when she was in Miles' room was shower for nearly an hour. When she came out, an outfit waited for her on the giant bed. It consisted of short cotton shorts and a t-shirt, both in her size. Devyn rolled her eyes when she realized undergarments had been neglected. She couldn't complain, though. They were clothes and she'd gotten a shower and a bed. Those had been the only two things on her list.
Devyn dressed quickly and let her hair fall down her shoulders in damp ringlets. There were large bags under her eyes and she had bruises and scratches all over her face, arms, neck, and legs. Her lip was still split and she had a few scratches on her cheeks, chin, and forehead. In other words: she thought she looked like shit.
Devyn slipped between the sheets of Miles' bed and snuggled down. She didn't even care that it was his bed. It smelled freshly washed and it made Devyn feel even more comfortable. In ten minutes, she was asleep; in half an hour she was dead to the world.
Miles finished his work, made a few calls, and called it a day at four. He'd have supper brought up to his room. He walked into his room not knowing what to expect, but when he saw Devyn asleep and heard her light snore, his heart skipped a beat. She was beautiful even with the bags under her eyes and her body covered in scratches and bruises. He stripped down to his boxers and climbed into his bed next to her. He lay on his side, studying her. He touched her lip where he'd smacked her a few days before. He felt bad instantly.
Devyn opened her eyes to find Miles looking at her. She felt her heart sputter in her chest. She searched his face and forced herself to breathe and calm down. She knew he wasn't going to harm her if he hadn't already. He wasn't going to kill her. He also would have done that already. She looked into his eyes and felt her face heat up. They looked so familiar to her but she couldn't place them, once again.
"Go back to sleep, love. I'll wake you when the food is brought up." Miles swept her hair out of her face as he spoke gently.
Devyn let her eyes sweep over Miles' face once more before rolling onto her side so her back was facing Miles. She wasn't sure what would happen next. Devyn felt Miles wrap an uncertain arm around her middle and she was surprised to realize it didn't bother her. When Miles didn't feel Devyn stiffen, he pulled her close to him and settled in next to her. Devyn kept herself relaxed and let Miles pull her against him.
That comforted him. He was going to wait to call for food until around five. He was in no rush and he knew that Devyn could use the sleep. He knew she hadn't been sleeping at all in the cell. There had been cameras watching her every move to prove that much. Miles listened to her even breathing as she slept and reveled in the smell of her. Devyn smelled amazing to Miles and his wolf.
There wasn't a doubt in his mind now that Devyn was his mate. She was his. His wolf was ready to claim her, but Miles knew he'd have to ease her into this lifestyle. It was tough for humans to accept sometimes. She would be no different. She had strong human attachments. He could tell that much.
Miles watched her sleep for a long time before getting out of his bed to call for food. He asked for a bit of everything, since he really didn't know what she'd eat. When the food was ordered, Miles stepped into the bathroom and showered quickly. He had a towel wrapped around his waist when he came out. A knock on the door signaled the meal was there and he noticed Devyn roll over in her sleep.
Devyn sat up in Miles bed and looked around. She could smell the food and her stomach growled angrily at her. Miles had his back turned to her and she ran a hand through her disheveled hair, pulling it over her shoulder before she got out of the bed. She went to the bathroom first. Her bladder was screaming for release, and once she was done she washed her hands and studied herself in the mirror. She didn't look any better. There were still gigantic dark circles under her eyes, and her face was banged up. She was a mess. Devyn splashed some water over her face before drying her hands and face and going back out to the bathroom.
"Sleep well?" Miles was sitting at the table looking over papers when Devyn joined him.
Devyn shrugged and pulled her good knee up to her chest. There was so much food, and the smell of it made her stomach growl again.
Miles laughed loudly and put his papers aside. He would have preferred a spoken answer from Devyn, but he was done being hostile towards her. That wouldn't get them anywhere and he wanted Devyn to relax. The more relaxed she was the easier it would be to get through to her.
"I think I should call Stew." Devyn said as she let Miles put some spaghetti on her plate.
"I've taken care of it. He's been informed of the situation and he's allowing you some leave time," Miles replied serving himself a steak.
"Still...Miles, I just want to talk to him." Devyn sat back in her chair feeling defeated yet again. She was exhausted and she didn't want to start another fight.
"That's fine. After you eat, though." Miles said as he took a large piece of steak into his mouth.
Devyn gave him a small smile before twirling some spaghetti onto her fork and taking a bite. It was so good. Her taste buds exploded and she almost groaned. Instead she finished the heap of noodles before sitting back in her chair. She was so full she felt like her stomach might rip open at any minute. Miles had finished his steak ten minutes prior and was back to reading over his papers. Devyn got up from her chair and stretched languidly.
"I'll have Jeff take you down to my office so you can have some privacy while you talk to Stew. Just don't try anything." Miles spoke softly to Devyn.
Devyn nodded and let herself be led down to the massive office.
Devyn tried the office number she'd been given in case of emergencies then Liam's cell phone, but neither were answered. She tried Stew's cell phone last and he answered on the second ring.
Devyn got tears in her eyes when she heard Stew's familiar voice. It was a relief to her. It was something normal and she didn't want to hang up. She knew she'd have to eventually, though.
"Stew, it's me." Devyn replied after she'd swallowed the lump in her throat.
"Devyn, thank God! Are you okay?" Stew sounded worried and relieved at the same time.
"I'm fine, Stew. Really. I'm okay." Devyn had silent tears rolling down her cheeks as she spoke.
"Look, Devyn, it's fine. He can't keep you there forever." Stew sounded angry now.
"I'm fine, Stew. I'm not scared and they aren't hurting me..." Devyn let her sentence trail off and bit her lower lip as she waited for Stew to reply.
"We're still trying to negotiate to have you returned, but Alpha Wellington isn't budging."
"Stew, stop. Okay? I don't want you risking anything. I'm fine, really."
"Devyn, are you sure you're okay?"
"If I wasn't okay I would have used the opportunities he's given me to get the fuck out. He isn't going to hurt me. I don't think anyway." Devyn took a deep breath and sat back in the giant office chair behind Miles' desk.
"You worry me kid. Just, call me as much as you can, okay? I need to make sure you're okay." Devyn had been the closest thing to a daughter for Stew and he wasn't willing to lose her that easily.
"Promise," Devyn replied before hanging up.
She took a deep breath before getting up from the chair and letting Jeff, the Alpha's second, lead her back up to Miles' room. He was still sitting at the table reading papers. The food had been cleared and Miles had put a shirt on. Devyn went to the bed and sat where she'd been sleeping earlier. She felt Miles watching her but it didn't bother her.
"Do you know why you're here? Do you understand why I'm keeping you?" Devyn studied Miles carefully and felt a blush warm her cheeks.
"I don't," she replied shaking her head.
"You're my mate." Miles watched as realization blossomed on Devyn's face.
"How is that possible? I thought mating with humans was against the rules or laws or whatever." Devyn sat up quickly and watched Miles. This was freaking her out.
"That law was abolished more than fifty years ago, love. Too many Weres were finding mates in humans," Miles replied softly.
"So...wait." Devyn squeezed her eyes shut and put her face in her hands.
"This is why I didn't want to tell you for a few days more." Miles sighed and got up from the bed.
"So, you're telling me I can't go back to my human life..." Devyn watched Miles pace around his room.
"I'm not saying that. I'm saying I'm not going to give you up without a fight." Miles stopped pacing and looked at Devyn.
"I have a home and a job...I have siblings." Devyn's voice shook as she spoke and she stood from the bed. She suddenly didn't feel good.
"You don't have to leave it. You don't have to leave that life. You can still see your brother and sisters. You can keep your penthouse. You know today's world isn't like it used to be. Most of us have learned to peacefully coexist amongst one another." Devyn knew he was right, but that didn't do much to ease her mind.
She didn't know how she was supposed to react. She was upset. She was elated. Her heart was telling her to accept it, but her body and mind were telling her to get mad about it.
Devyn had never had a serious relationship. She'd had dates and shared kisses. She was a virgin. She wasn't the marrying type. She wasn't the mate type. She was always moving and she was always working. She liked not having to think about anyone else but herself for the most part. She wasn't ready for the responsibility. At twenty Devyn lived on her own, thought for herself, and didn't worry about anything but work. How was she supposed to change her life around that fast?
"I'm not cut out for this...I'm not anything like mate material."
"My wolf wouldn't make this kind of mistake, Devyn. I'm not playing games with you." Miles glared at Devyn. She was being immature in his eyes.
"I'm not playing games with you either, Miles! I'm not ready for this!" Devyn shouted as she went into the bathroom and slammed the door.
Miles sighed and shook his head. She'd come around. She would have to. That was all there was to it. She wasn't leaving until she came to terms with it. Even then she wouldn't leave unless he was with her. She'd be under constant supervision whether she liked it or not.
"Come out here please, Devyn." Miles said in a calm tone as he tried the doorknob of the bathroom which was locked.
Devyn, feeling defeated, unlocked and opened the door slowly. Miles was towering over her and she felt even more defeated. She looked down at her hands which she was ringing nervously. Miles felt sorry for her. She was exhausted and frustrated. This wasn't how things were supposed to turn out. He had faith that she'd accept the situation, though.
Miles took Devyn's hands in his and brought them to his face. Devyn had to look up now. She watched as Miles inhaled her scent and kissed her fingers and hands. It gave her chills and Miles noticed. She was definitely going to accept the lifestyle soon.
"Let's go to bed." Miles voice was low and gentle as he pulled Devyn with him toward the bed.
"What happens now?" Devyn whispered in the nearly dark room as she lay in bed on her side next to Miles who was studying her.
"We wait. I won't schedule a ceremony until you've fully accepted your position," Miles replied kissing her forehead.
"No...I mean now." Devyn sounded scared and Miles suddenly understood.
"Nothing. Not if you don't want it to." Miles could tell by the way she asked she'd either never done anything with a guy or hadn't been very far.
Satisfied with that answer Devyn closed her eyes and, absentmindedly, moved in closer to Miles' radiating body heat. The cool of Devyn's skin made Miles growl lightly and he held her tightly. He wasn't letting her go, that was for sure.
