"He burned the life out of millions of thralls trying to kill us," Alyssa said, stroking John's back when she felt his deep-seated sense of remorse. "When there were none left, he was finally weak enough for John to incinerate that bastard."

Jack looked horrified, his expression warring between disbelief and revulsion.

Calara nodded, empathising with his reaction. "When Larn'kelnar slaughtered all his thralls, he also wiped out all the Larathyran women manning his fleets. That means there's a thousand highly-advanced thrall warships sitting out in deep space without any crews. Our absolute highest priority, to the exclusion of everything else -apart from taking you home to mom- is capturing those fleets and manning them with Maliri women loyal to John."

"Loyal to you?" Jack murmured, still reeling from everything else he'd just been told.

"I've claimed the Maliri," John replied, his voice sombre. "I lead them now, but they're not my enslaved thralls. I'm doing whatever I can to protect them and get their fleets ready to fight the Progenitor War."

"There's dozens of Progenitors, dad. We're outnumbered at least 40 to 1," Calara said, a bleak look in her eyes. "Each of them has more ships than the entire Terran Federation, and their battleships are nearly as strong as the Invictus. If we can't reactivate Mael'nerak's hyper-warp gate, capture Larn'kelnar's ghost fleets, then find a way to upgrade them and the Invictus... we're doomed."

"Stop!" Jack protested, holding his hand up, a wild look in his eyes. "Please... just stop! I can't take any more... just give me a second!"

Alyssa sat next to him and gave him a sympathetic sideways hug. "Total mindfuck, right?"

He nodded, holding his head in his hands. "How the hell can you be so calm about all this? There's dozens of Progenitors, they've got massive fleets of Invictus-level warships, we're all teetering on the brink of total annihilation... and you're our only chance of stopping them?!"

"I've been preparing for this war my whole life," Calara said resolutely. "All those years I spent obsessing over strategy and tactics... all the time you spent teaching me everything you knew about fleet combat; this is where it all comes together. I'm going to lead John's forces against the Progenitors in a war that will make the Battle of Terra look like a pirate skirmish."

Jack stared at her, experiencing a moment of epiphany. "And John enhanced you to be the perfect Fleet Admiral."

"I'm serving the greater good of the galaxy, dad," she said, holding her head up high. "There's no one else that can do this... and I'm not going to let our family down. You've given me the strength and resolve I need to see me through the war."

He marvelled at Calara's confidence, her calm composure filling him with a renewed sense of hope. "I didn't think I could be more proud of you than that day at the award ceremony. I was wrong."

They hugged fiercely, drawing comfort and strength from that embrace.

Alyssa's eyelashes fluttered and she wavered slightly on the sofa.

*What was that? Are you alright?* John asked, reaching out to steady the blonde.

*Goddamn that was a rush!* she gasped, her eyes glowing with a brilliant incandescent light.

Huh. Mostly liked Alyssa before this. Her arrogance, smugness and manipulation are a bit of a turn off. Appreciate the story moving forward and developing and I suppose that characters can't be perfect, but ugh. To ambush someone (Zelig) who is brave enough to stand up for what's right despite her overwhelming power to harm him and who has decades of leadership experience she could learn from... Well, it's that kind of hubris that should make Zelig even more concerned. Lynette too if she's allowed to see it. Even if Alyssa and the girls have more ability and a lot of recent combat experience, they'd be wise to seek out alternative viewpoints from experienced leaders beyond just Edraele - whom Alyssa usually just runs over anyway. Kinda looking like Alyssa's a bit of a brat.

so... allysa repeatedly says she needs toget out the progenitor shuttle, and instead of acting, you know to protect her.. johnnette wants to ask questions.. find out whats wrong.. talk about feelings.. like a bitch. toooooo deep in his emotions, being reactive instead of proactive.. but dont worry, hes got a mouth load from how much he sucks to moan out, "im sorry."

I'm really enjoyed this story. I love all the space battles and that they slowly bring out the plot of these progenitors. But this was my least favorite chapter. I'm tired of this constant rehashing of how the girls all became superwomen. It just is saying everything that's already been gone through. Sometimes this author just can't stop rehashing and rehashing things. I worry sometimes he's run out of ideas to continue the story
