"Why are you helping me?"
"That's not important."
"But—"
"Look." The young woman drew as close as she dared without making physical contact. "There isn't time for all this. Do you want to get out of this place?"
"Yes."
"Then shut up and do what I say. Now let's go."
To my surprise she reached out and caught me by the arm when my wobbly legs swayed under me as I tried to stand. "If this is going to work you must be able to run; can you do that?"
I braced myself, willing my shaky limbs to hold my weight. "Yes."
"Good," she replied, wiping her gloved hands on her pant legs. "Let's go find your friend."
