Click here"Alert," the computer announced. "Sensors detect two vessels inbound. They are hailing."
"Put them through." Vas tried to compose herself. "This is Endira Vas of the Arrowhead! We need help! My mate's been hurt!"
"This is Captain Oxilu of the Coalition star cruiser Golis. Sit tight. We'll be there in a few minutes."
When James Barret awoke, he was in an infirmary bed and his head felt like a starship had landed on it.
"James!" Vas hugged him gently. "Thank the Goddesses you're okay."
"Hey, baby," he said weakly.
"You're a lucky man, Captain," a female human wearing a doctor's uniform said.
"What happened?" Barret asked, not sure if he wanted an answer.
"You proved a theory, Captain," the doctor said. "You proved that the Verokk are telepathic. And that they can't affect us humans too easily. But the Verokk you met scrambled your brains pretty good."
"Where are we?"
"Aboard the Golis," Vas said. "They're taking us to planet Yegvid so you can be looked over."
"And Larik'Ni?"
"She's just fine. I got a subspace message from her a little while ago. I told her that we'll be back to get her as soon as we can. Now you need to rest." She stood and kissed her mate.
Vas looked over her shoulder as the door closed behind her. She said a silent thanks to her Goddesses for sending James Barret to her, and prayed that, soon, she would see Larik'Ni again. They still had to team up on Barret, after all.
