They reached the harbor, boarded the ship and waited on the telling signs that their voyage was underway. When the ship set sail, Rose remained in her and her father's quarters. Her heart was heavy and her chest was tight. "Rose, some say goodbye."
She looked up and stared at Mark. The doctor had decided his time in Africa was done and he was returning home, a new doctor had arrived and was eagerly looking forward to treating the natives. She stood up and placed her hand in his. He gave it a squeeze and took her up on deck.
Rose scanned the shore and watched as a lone black man appeared. Her tears fell freely and she prayed that when Kame walked through Heaven's gate he would see the beauty that he'd dreamed about.
