Click hereThe Alpha from Lawton showed up first. I was surprised that the Alpha of a pack of 400 was female. Sexist I know, but true. She shook my hand with a firm handshake. She was testing my will. Her name was Sylvia. She had red hair and brown eyes with freckles across her face and body. Her skin was tanned but yet light at the same time.
She sat on my couch in silence until the Oklahoma City Alpha, Hector, showed up. He was black skinned and had skinny dreadlocks. It suited him very well honestly. His eyes were as black as his skin He had a brilliant smile that reached his eyes every time he smiled. He and Sylvia stayed near the barn until Tulsa showed up. They greeted Javier and they stayed silent next to each other. The atmosphere seemed tense around them.
I offered them food and drinks while they were out there waiting. Hector politely declined for all of them. I went inside fuming quietly. I slammed the plate of steaks down, breaking it in half.
Marcus came over and massaged my shoulders. "Calm down sunshine." He said.
"They are all standing out there like there is a plague in here."
"They haven't seen something like us in all their years. They are worried about what will come to our species."
"And how do you know this?" I asked.
"I can hear better than you can."
I heard more tires come up the road and I went to the door. Brent's silver truck came up the drive with Jed in the passenger seat. Brent parked and I bounded out the door and into his arms as soon as he was out of the truck. It felt as though something that was missing finally found its way home.
He wrapped his arms around me and inhaled my scent. "God woman I have missed you."
"You leave my side again and you'll regret it." I said in a serious tone. I narrowed my eyes and he just smiled. His lips met mine in a breathtaking kiss.
He broke the kiss when his thumb ran over the new scar and I winced. "What happened?" He asked moving my sleeve to see the scar.
"Derek." I answered and looked away. "He's in the tunnel."
"I'll kill him." He said and let go of me.
"You can't."
"Watch me." He said.
"You can't because he has threatened my life and now has to face the consequences at my claws. He or I will die tonight."
"You can't do that. What if you lose?"
"Well I guess I won't have to worry about that tomorrow then, now will I?"
"Damn it Jade!" Brent yelled.
"If you were here you could have taken care of him. If it weren't for Marcus I would most likely be dead."
"Marcus?" He asked.
"The rogue that came with me." I said.
"I remember who he is. I think I have to thank him." He hugged me again. "I can't imagine this life without you now." He kissed my temple.
"Well let's get to business." I said and grabbed his hand and we went into my kitchen where the others were waiting.
The meeting mainly consisted of dull talking, what we were, how we found out what we were. It was hard to say how Marcus healed my wound with Brent there. He squeezed my hand as he passed Marcus death stares. Jed had told the story of the vampires that I took out. The three sat in silence as they listened.
We discussed tactics for taking out the Enlightened. Even planned a war. The three were all for a war against the Oklahoma division. Unlike small town packs, they had numbers. Tulsa had 500, Lawton had 400, Okc had close to 800. But the main question was, could we get all of them to fight? When death is most likely certain, most will run. It was the way of things. Sylvia said anyone in her pack that ran would be branded an outcast and traitor. I would never do that. If you thought for certain you were going to die, you would most likely die. It was your mindset that determined whether you would win or lose. Sure thousands have lost their lives thinking they were going to win, but they fought with everything they had. Those were true warriors to me.
The moon rose and I could feel the change. It was a full moon tonight and we didn't have a choice to change or not. It was when we were at our greatest. During the new moon we could change but it took more energy. All of us went outside naked as a jaybird. Marcus brought Derek from the tunnel. He was already half way changed. It proved how weak he was. I could hold off on the change for an hour or two but it hurt. Once the moon was on the horizon weak ones changed almost immediately.
I embraced my wolf in me. I welcomed her with open arms. I felt my spine lengthen into a tail, my jaw crunch and grow. My teeth became sharper. I watched the fur sprout from my arms as the bones popped and grow. When I could no longer stand on my hind legs, I braced myself for the forward fall to my front legs. The last of the change was my ears moving to the top of my head. It always made me shiver.
I looked at the others and they all looked at me in amazement. What seemed to take forever to me only happens in moments. I was the fastest changer anyone had seen. One minute I was woman, the next I was wolf. It was the only ability I had that could save me in a fight. The others are helpless until they change completely. It's when we are our most vulnerable.
Marcus was the next one finished; he was only a few seconds slower than me. The rest changed completely within two minutes. The slowest of us could take up to five minutes to change. Derek was the last to change at three minutes. I rolled my eyes as we waited. I had told the others about what had happened and they agreed that it was a fight to the death with Derek. They were not to step in for either one of us. They said if I were to die tonight I was not truly a queen. I agreed with them.
Derek and I circled each other, growling so low a human couldn't hear it. I bared my teeth and felt that my wolf wanted this more than I did. She wanted the weak one dead. I wanted control tonight. I wanted to be the one that spilled his blood, the one that tore his stomach open. I wanted to kill him. Once she saw this in my mind she backed off.
Derek snapped at me and I swiped with a paw. I hit him on the side of the head and he whined. I didn't think I hit him that hard. I didn't want this to be over too soon.
Brent
He was feigning an injury. It made Jade hesitate for just a moment but that was what Derek wanted. He was on top of her in a flash, clawing and tearing. I growled and inched forward. Jed moved in front of me. I couldn't help her. I couldn't watch.
I turned and walked away to the other side of the house. I could still hear the fighting but I couldn't stand to watch her get hurt.
Marcus
I sat and watched patiently. I hoped she decided to end this soon. Derek had surprised her but she had already taken control of the fight. Blood streamed from Derek's muzzle. It wasn't a killing wound but it would leave a scar even in human form. Good. Jade pounced on his back tearing into the back of his neck and he ran in circles trying to get her off. He whined this time in actual pain instead of faking it. He stood up on his hind legs when she would let go and fell back on top of her. She whined this time after her head hit the ground with a loud thud.
Derek immediately got up and went for her throat. He had closed off her wind pipe and was crushing it. He was stupid enough to do it directly over her than from the side. She used her hind legs and tore into his stomach. He let go immediately and whined so loud. I caught sight of red and pink protruding from his stomach. The fight was almost over.
Jade coughed and got up. Derek was trying to run but each movement he made hurt him more. Jade pounced on him once more but this time he ended up on his stomach. He howled in pain as she dug her muzzle into the opened wound. She pulled out intestines with her teeth and backed away from him until it tugged. She tore it from his body. It still wasn't a killing blow. He would die slowly now. But she didn't want that. She wanted him to suffer more pain. He was laying on his back unconscious. He wouldn't feel anything now. She slapped him across the face and his eyes shot open. He howled so loud I was sure the town would hear it as though it were in their front yard. She grabbed his windpipe like he had done her but crushed it immediately. He fell silent trying to get a breath. She reared her head back like a snake and struck breaking his neck. Derek's heart stopped and he went limp. The fight was over. She had won. It was gruesome. I had to remind myself not to piss her off.
She turned to look at me. The grief in her eyes made my heart break for her. Even after he tried to kill her, she had loved him. She laid down next to him and whined softly. I could see tears coming from her eyes. She didn't want to do this but she had to. If she had never changed to a werewolf they would probably be married now, adopted a child perhaps. She chose this life and now she had to live with the consequences that came with it. In that moment I felt sorry for her.
Jade
The others let me be and did their own thing until the sun rose. I stayed by Derek until his body changed back. I couldn't stand to be with him in his human form. His wounds looked worse. I already missed his heartbeat. As much as I thought I hated him in the end I realized how much he meant to me still. I had given him my heart and he still had a piece of it with him. That piece would never heal. He was my human soul mate. He deserved his paradise now.
I got up and made the change back to human before I was even to the porch. I wanted a shower and sleep. I was covered in dry blood. The others got dressed and shook Jed's hand. Another meeting would be held soon but with more alphas. They left and as soon as I got to the bottom step the doorbell rang. I grabbed a robe I kept by the door and put it on. I answered and a man was standing there. I immediately knew he was a wolf. He had dark brown almost black hair and blue eyes. He stood not much taller than me.
"Can I help you?" I asked.
"I ran all night. I am here answering your call." He said. His voice was like deep velvet.
"What call?"
"Wolves for miles felt the call of a new Queen and King. I saw some running away from it. I imagine there will be more coming to see you." He said.
"I'll handle this." Jed said as he came up behind me in a pair of shorts. Go get some rest, love."
By the time I got up it was mid afternoon. I dressed and went downstairs to the smell of bacon and sausage. I wanted food horribly. To my surprise the man was at the table with Jed, Marcus, and Brent.
He looked freshly showered and had on new clothes. What was it with nomads that didn't have fresh anything? There were motels all around along with stores that held clothes. I was spending more on clothes than anything and none of it was for me. If I had to feed and clothe every nomad that I came across I was going to go broke fast. I didn't like being broke. It sucked ass. Yes, I'm not the spoiled rich girl that many claim me to be. There was a time after mom died that we almost lost the house and that bills piled so high we were drowning in red numbers and the only food dad and I had to eat for a while was ramen. I swore I would never see us that way again and invested my money wisely. Dad told me I should invest in the stock market but I wasn't that good.
I sat down and Brent put a plate of nothing but meat in front of me. I happily dug in.
"I want to go out tonight." I said.
"Sure we can go running." Brent said.
"No, I want to go to a bar. I want to dance, I want to drink, and I want to come home so damn drunk that I have to be carried."
"Sweet heart, we can't get drunk." Jed said.
"I'll be the first one then." I said
That night I applied the last of my makeup and put on perfume. Jed, Brent, Marcus, and the new guy named Jaqen but went by Jaq, pronounced Jack, were waiting downstairs. I let them wait. Bastards owed me something at least.
I looked at myself in the mirror one last time. I wore black jeans with knee high wedge heeled boots. I don't like extremely high heels, my two inch heels were pushing it but hey, I liked them. I had on a soft blue halter top that showed ample cleavage. When you got it, flaunt it. My hair hung down with two spirals by my ears. I was going to a honkey-tonk bar, not some black tie affair. I hoped to god the men didn't think it was a fancy place. I sighed.
I went downstairs and Marcus and Jaq stood up as I got to the last step. No tuxes...which was good. They all wore blue jeans and shirts of assorted colors.
"I call first dance." Marcus said.
I smiled. "Then you'll buy my first drink."
"Deal." He said and took my arm.
Brent
Jade sat in the backseat between Jed and Marcus. I could tell she didn't trust Jaq. I didn't either. He gave me bad vibes. What I really wanted to do was toss him out of the truck and keep on going but I knew Jade would get pissed off for it.
I had stayed behind to track the lead I had against the Enlightened. I had let her go because she would have gotten right in the middle of it and she's not smart enough when to turn around. I haven't lived this long without running away sometimes. Jade was too head strong for this. She doesn't run away when she needs too. It's one of her faults and one of her strengths. One of the many reasons I loved her.
I looked in the mirror at her. She had her head on Marcus's shoulder. He moved her hair from her eyes. Anger and a new form of jealousy ripped through me. But he was the supposed King. Sure they weren't meant to be a mated pair but she just kept drawing in the men. Jack knew the line not to cross and he never did. He loved her in his own way but not a way that would be a threat to me. She was mine and I didn't like the other man touching her. It took everything I had not to slam on the breaks and tear him from the back seat and beat him into submission. He glanced at me in the mirror and dropped his hand. I knew they could all smell the anger. It was a part of being a lycanthrope that you had to deal with. No privacy. Ever.
It was a weird part, everyone smelled different with their own scent but there were ways that we could smell the same. When one joined a pack their scent would change just a bit and that bit would mark them as pack. Feelings could change a scent slightly as well. It could also cause a power spike and bring the change. Strong feelings of any kind could bring the change. Jade told me I smelled like sandalwood and vanilla and she smelled like vanilla and honey to me. Mates usually smelled similar.
We reached the bar with my anger in check. I could smell the cigarette smoke from outside and the music blaring. It was a country bar and I figured everyone would look like the TV version of redneck but they surprisingly didn't. I mean some did but most looked like they were from a city during a night on the town.
We walked inside and got ID'd which was customary for everyone.
"Jade!" The bartender said from across the large room. It was still close to opening and hardly anyone was there.
"Hey Chris." She said.
"How's my favorite customer?"
"Chris, everyone is your favorite customer."
"But how many do I know by name?" He asked.
"You know me by name because you dated Nikki for a while."
"True, but you're still my favorite. Are all these men yours?" He asked.
"Just Brent. The rest are friends." She came over to me and put her arm around my waist.
"Cool. You're usual table is open, whiskey sour as usual?"
"Of course and keep them coming."
"Want a tab?"
"Yep, and I have a feeling that you're gonna love me come tomorrow."
"I always do." He said as she led us to a table.
An hour later eight glasses sat in front of her empty. She still wasn't buzzed and was getting irritated because of it. "Dance with me Marcus." She said and took his hand.
I watched them go to the dance floor and took a swig of my beer. Six sat in front of me as a waitress finally came by and collected everything empty.
Jed sat next to me and Jaq was on the other side of Jed. I watched her and Marcus dance. It was the simple two step but it seemed too intimate for them.
"There is the future of us all." Jed said to me quietly. Even over the blaring music I could hear him. "They'll either save us or we all die." He downed his beer and a waitress brought another.
"Well either way, no more worries." Jaq said.
"Even if we do win, they'll always be something out there hunting us." Jed told him. "How old are you boy? Real age, not what you tell everyone."
"Eighty." He answered.
"Still a pup."
"I see that most of my favorite ladies are here tonight! Would my little devils like to come out and play?" The DJ said.
Jade motioned for Marcus to go back to the table and stayed while most other went off the dance floor but six more girls went on. They all smiled at each other and then got into a line side by side. The Devil Went Down To Georgia came on and they started a very odd line dance that consisted more with movement of the feet that went in beat with the song. It looked rehearsed.
The bar clapped as they watched. I glanced over at Marcus watching Jade. He raised a beer up to his lips. I hated him.
Marcus
As the girls stomped out the last movements to the song the crowd applauded. Jade went to the bar and came back with three shot glasses. She put one in front of Brent and I and downed the one in her hand.
"What is that?" Brent asked.
"You don't want to know the name of it because you'll never drink it." She said.
"Smells like coffee." He said.
"Drink the damn thing, you'll like it."
He grabbed it and drank the shot.
"That my friend is called a blowjob." I said and downed my own shot. Jade laughed.
"So where did you learn to two step city boy?" She asked me.
"I ain't no city boy." I said in my best southern accent. She smiled.
"Jade!" A woman yelled and came up with a man.
"Ariel! Richard!" She hugged them both.
"Been too long." Richard said and I noticed his hand lingered on her back far too long. "Can I get our usual dance?"
"My night wouldn't be complete without it." Jade said as he took her hand and led her out to the dance floor. It was a waltz. What didn't this girl know how to do? She still amazes me day to day with things she does that most girls this day and age don't or can't do. They caught up on the past two years. Of course Jade kept things omitted.
Then something odd happened. The man's scent changed.
Jade
Richard twirled me around and I suddenly smelled the most mouthwatering smell ever. He smelled like food. The dance called for me to lower myself and I sniffed him all the way down. I heard thunder distantly but it was the last thing on my mind. I raised back up and looked at him.
"Jade?" He asked and tried to let go of me.
"Remember our first time together?" I said, my voice deeper than normal.
"My wife is here." Richard said.
"Your point is?" I asked and pulled him against me.
"Jade." Jed was suddenly next to me.
I growled at him. "Jade, I am your alpha, let him go now." Jed said quietly and held out his hand like he was asking me to dance.
I lowered my head and bared my teeth but held my hand out to him. He pulled me away and went to the door. Fresh air wafted in and I looked outside. Not a cloud in the sky but the thunder was there.
"Make them come in here, make them cause a scene. Out themselves." I said.
"Is your head clear now?" Jed asked.
"Keep Richard away from me." I went back to the table and Jed followed me. A green drink was waiting for me. I could smell the everclear in it. I downed it and got a little buzz that lasted maybe two minutes. My night had been ruined. Richard was sent in as a trap to lure us out.
About five years ago Richard and I had a fling, the thing was, he didn't tell me he was married or a father. Yeah, I'm not a home wrecker, or not intentionally.
