"What is The Enlightened?" I asked

"You must be new." He said.

"Just last night." I answered.

"Welcome to the family." Brent said with a smile. "The Enlightened is an organization that hunt us down because a select few have made us out to be murderers. Brian, Jack, and I only live off of wild game. I tell you I do miss cooked meat."

"Hasn't anyone ever stood up to them?" I asked.

"Many have but they weren't seen again. Some were taken for studying so they could make a cure. But some of us don't want to be cured. Sure the ones that were made without a choice might, but I love what I am and I don't want to change it."

"Were you made by choice?" I asked.

"I was. Jack made me. He's my brother. Brian is our childhood friend. What are your names? You told us Jessie, the black haired girl."

"I'm Jade and this is Derek." I said as we pulled up to Derek's house outside of town. I shot him a glance and the grimace on his face made my heart seize for a second. I had never seen him so angry.

I slid out behind Brent and the other two jumped out of the back. Derek just stayed in the truck. I rolled my eyes and reached in and took the keys from the ignition.

"Lighten the fuck up." I said and led the three men to the house. "Bathroom is down the hall on your left. Can't miss it."

"This house hasn't been used in a while." Jack said. "I can smell two others but they are long gone."

"This house is a lot larger than mine and I have a woman at my house that is still human. She freaks out at the slightest thing."

"I see." Jack said and his eyes darted to Brent and then to the ground.

"So others know your secret?"

"Only the woman and two others." I answered as Brian went to the bathroom first.

"It's nice to trust people." Jack said and sat down on the couch.

"I can only offer water here. There isn't anything else." I said.

"Ice?" Brent asked.

"That I do have." I smiled and went to the kitchen.

The fridge had an automatic ice maker. I grabbed three glasses and filled them up with ice water.

I watched as Derek pulled away in the truck. Fine if he wanted to be an unsociable bastard let him.

"You'll have to forgive Derek, he's very touchy when it comes to other werewolves."

"Most are. I do not blame him. Any wolves we have run across have tried to kill us or run away. You are very kind Jade."

"Thank you." I said. "I'm going to run to town and grab my car since Derek wanted to be an ass. You are welcome to anything here. Derek should have a few clothes here that should fit you guys. If not, Solomon's room is across from the bathroom. He was smaller but still just a big. Derek's room is at the top of the stairs."

"And the other room?"

"Well if you want to wear some women's clothes that's up to you. I won't judge."

"You're funny." Jack said.

"I try." I said and headed to the front door.

On the porch I heard Brent say, "I like her." I couldn't help but smile.

I reached my house in record time for running but my feet were aching. I could feel the drain of no sleep. Derek wasn't there. I grabbed my keys and went to my car. A note was on the driver's seat.

I'll be back in a couple days. I'm going to make absolute sure that The Enlightened isn't following them. If they are we have to leave on a moment's notice. Be ready. They don't smell like rogues so they shouldn't hurt you or Jessie. If a rogue comes by you will know. They have the stench of rotting flesh that only we can smell. I just want us to be safe. We are a family now. I love you.

-Derek-

That's why he was so pissed. I put the letter in my glove box and started the car. At least he trusted me enough to leave me alone. This was going to be the first time I'd been away from him since we met. I kind of felt empty.

I drove back to Derek's house and only Brent was in the living room.

"Brian took advantage of your request and fell asleep in the room across from the bathroom."

"It's all right. You can stay here until you want to move on." I said. "If he's still asleep when we're ready to go we can always bring him back something."

"You're too kind."

"I'm actually a bitch to be honest. You've caught me on a good day."

"Well I'm glad for that. But what shocks me is that your mate would leave you."

"He is making sure that you weren't followed. This town is our home and we really don't want to leave."

"Good man." Brent said.

I looked at Brent. He had green eyes with specks of blue in them. His skin was tan and I noticed he had a tattoo on his arm. It was a military insignia of a battalion. He was muscular but just. His stomach held lines of a six pack but barely. Some were meant to get six packs and some just weren't made for it. I knew one guy that never worked out a day in his life and had a six pack and muscles galore and I knew another guy that overdid the work out and had never achieved even a four pack.

"So last night was your first time?"

"Yep." I answered.

"I remember my first night. It was exhilarating."

"It was." I replied just staring off into space remembering last night.

I heard the bathroom door open. "Shower's free." Jack said.

"I'll wait for the hot water tank." He said.

"Well I'm gonna crash on a bed while I can." He said.

"Alright." Brent said.

"So how old are you Brent? I mean how long have you been a wolf?" I asked.

"186 years." He answered.

"Wow." I replied.

"If you're lucky you'll live longer and without so much hardship. The crash of '33 we only lived off of deer if we were able to find it. It's not so bad now."

"Hopefully." I said.

We sat in silence for a little bit as I had found comfortable position in the chair. My eyes drooped and I fought to keep them open. I was so damn tired. I jumped when I heard the bathroom door click shut and I opened my eyes. Brent had disappeared from the couch. I had time for a short nap. I hoped.

The next thing I knew I heard whispering.

"She's out. You know that first change takes everything out. I'm shocked she was awake as long as she was." Brent said.

"So what do we do if The Enlightened did get this far? Do we warn them or let them fend for themselves? The male may not come back for them." Brian said.

"They are both new to this life. They wouldn't stand a chance." Brent said.

"But they will drag us down." Jack said.

"The blonde has promise. She stood her ground against her dominant." Brian said.

"Mates do that." Jack said.

"And they may not be mates." Brent said. "We can stay and stand our ground. I'm sick of running."

"And you saw what happened to Olivia and her pack. There were 30 of them and they were slaughtered." Jack said.

"I have a feeling about this town, a good feeling that I've never had before." Brent said.

"You've fallen for a pair of pretty eyes is all." Jack said. "We need to leave."

"Then you two can leave. I'm going to stay."

"And if the male does come back?" Brian asked.

"Then I'll join you shortly."

"You'd turn you back on us after almost 200 years for a feeling?" Jack said angrily. "After all we've been through together?"

"You sound like a teenager being broken up with. Stop." Brian said. "We have all split for some reason. Let him do this. He'll join us again soon."

"Thanks Brian." Brent said.

I fell back to sleep before they finished their conversation. What if Derek didn't come back? Everything we had shared. I had given him all of myself. Something I had never done with a man. What if The Enlightened got him and I never knew? Damn it he shouldn't have left. He should have swallowed his pride. I'm sure if it were three women he would have stayed. Fucker.

I woke up to Jessie's ringtone. I more liked jumped out of the chair. The sun had set and I glanced over at the couch. Brent was asleep on it. I couldn't smell the other two. I answered the phone quietly.

"Hello?"

"Are you safe?" Derek's voice asked.

"Yeah, I fell asleep." I answered.

"They are here, stay where you are."

"Are you okay?" I asked.

"Stay where you are." He hung up.

"Fuck." I whispered and looked at the sleeping man across from me. I got up and grabbed a blanket from the cabinet in the hallway and put it over him. I went to the front door and opened it. It was raining. I heard thunder and it sounded so different.

"That's not thunder." Brent said and came up behind me. "It's part of their weapon to find us. The best thing we can do is stay hidden until they leave or try and make a run for it."

"Derek said stay." I said.

"How old is your mate?"

"129." I answered.

"Then you should listen to him. I'm sure he's one of the unlucky ones that has dealt with them. Is there a basement or cellar here?"

"There is a cellar out back." I answered.

"We can stay in there. Their weapon doesn't read underground."

"Daniel will take care of them." I said.

"Is Daniel your trustee?"

"And my father is one as well."

"I hope you can really trust them not to tell."

"They only know of Jessie and Derek. They don't even know I've changed." I said.

We gathered up what we could. I found a couple of gallons of water and Brent took them down to the cellar. There was only non perishable food there so we were stuck with ramen mostly. I grabbed flashlights and a lantern and a little kerosene stove. We put my car in the garage and locked the house like no one was there.

I got my last look at the sky before I shut the cellar door and latched the three locks.

That night was the worst. I felt like my skin was crawling and I had to get up and move.

"You need to change." Brent said after hours of silence.

"Not enough room in here." I said.

"Did he not tell you that you can partly change?"

"No." I answered.

"Watch me." He said and took off the borrowed shirt and shorts. I turned my head until he situated his blanket over his lap.

"You need to get used to nudity if you're going to be around lycans. It's something we can't avoid."

I nodded. I watched him change just bits and pieces at a time until he was what movies showed. A wolf in a man's form. He stood up and his head touched the ceiling but he wasn't as large as a horse. His speech came out weird but he could talk.

"Just concentrate. Usually it takes years of practice, but you need to change before you burst from your skin."

He thankfully turned as I got undressed. I concentrated as hard as I could. I pictured myself like Brent was. I felt the crack of bones and the lengthening of my spine into a tail.

Derek

Jim took Jessie and I downstairs into the basement. I was thankful that he was helping us.

"So Jade is okay?" He asked again.

"Yes. She is with another wolf that has been running from them for a while. He knows what to do."

"So she's one of you now?"

"She kind of forced him into it Mr. Woods." Jessie said.

"That sounds like Jade. How long must you hide?"

"Until the thunder goes away."I answered and closed the door behind Jessie and I. We went down the stairs and there was pretty much another living area.

"Mr. Woods's man cave when Mrs. Woods was alive." Jessie explained.

"So what to do until they leave?" I asked.

"Has anyone told Nikki?" Jessie asked.

"I'm sure Jim will." I answered and sat down in a chair.

Jade

I sat on the cot in a half form. It felt funny but the crawling sensation stopped. If only my dad could see me now. There was a mirror that was down here for storage. I caught a glimpse of myself in it and almost jumped out of my skin before I realized it was me I was staring at. I got up and went closer to it. In the light of the lantern I noticed my fur was almost white blonde. It was how I started out in life. I was born with platinum blonde hair that darkened over time to almost light brown but not quite brown yet.

My eyes stood out the most though. One was blue and the other green. It was complete heterochromia. I didn't have that as a human. My hands were claws instead of paws. I still had my thumb. In this form I still had a woman's figure but everything was covered in fur. I wasn't a Barbie doll that Hollywood would make me out to be. I glanced over at Brent where he was standing looking out the small window. He definitely wasn't as sexless as a Barbie. I turned back to my reflection and just stared. My face had formed a snout but it wasn't very elongated. My teeth were longer and I understood why speech was weird. Our teeth were too big for our mouths. I couldn't completely close mine.

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah." I answered quietly. My voice was a tad deeper.

Brent

I stole glances of the woman out of the corner of my eye. She was amazed with her reflection. She was pretty, I'd give her that. In all my years I'd never seen someone with two different colored eyes. Nor someone that I wanted to be close to. She moved back to her cot and it creaked when she sat down. The male had reinforced them. Under normal circumstances the frail metal would had crippled under our weight.

She laid down, now too tall for the human sized thing and placed her blanket over her. I went over and sat down on my cot and it creaked as well. She turned over and faced the wall and I smelled the faint whiff of salt. She was crying. I got up and moved the two feet over to her and put my hand on her shoulder. She turned her head and tried to hide the tears.

"You must think I'm so silly." She said.

"The first day is always the hardest. Mentally and physically. I ran away from a mirror the first time I saw myself."

"How old were you when you changed?"

"30." I answered.

"Yesterday was my 24th birthday."

"You chose your birthday?" I asked a little astounded.

"What's the difference from any other day?" She asked.

"No clue." I said and I saw her cheek move to a smile. She rolled over and looked up at me.

"I have a really dumb question."

"How do you change back?"

She nodded.

"Picture yourself as you with no fur." I answered. "Why did your mate not teach you these things before hand?"

"He really didn't talk about it much." She answered.

"He hates what he is."

"How can anyone hate this?" She asked as she looked at her claw. "I feel powerful. Like if I jumped I could touch the sky."

"He didn't have a choice did he?"

"No."

"Most of the ones that didn't choose this life hate it. They hate the monster inside them while we, the ones that chose, embrace the monster."

"Why do you call it a monster?"

"You will see the first time you change out of anger." I answered. It was irritating me that the male had chosen to change her but told her nothing of the life. She didn't even know she was being hunted. Yesterday she could've been safe and at home in her bed. Tonight she was stuck in a cellar while we were being hunted just for existing. I didn't blame her. I blamed the male. He should've known to tell her. If he created the other female I hoped to whatever god there was that he was protecting her. You do not leave one you just made. They are unpredictable and can change at a whim. But he left her. Maybe they were mates as humans but the wolves loathed each other. It was possible. I had seen it. In human form the mates could be inseparable, but as wolves they couldn't stand to be within 50 feet of each other.

"How was it running with him last night? Not the running, but being around him?"

"I wanted to be by myself honestly. Every time he got near I wanted to run farther from him. Is that normal the first time?"

"Not usually. Normally you want to be near your creator for a while." I told her.

"What does that mean?"

"Well I've seen wolves being mates as humans but in wolf form they had another mate. If they were never changed they would be what humans call soul mates. But you two are not wolf mates."

"So will I feel differently about him now?" She asked.

"Not in human form."

"So the draw I feel to you right now is normal?"

"No." I answered.

"Great." She said and got up.

My beast followed her with my eyes. He wanted us to complete the change so he could mount her. I threw that feeling back and quickly covered myself up with the blanket. That part I couldn't hide out in the open. She turned and looked at me.

"I'm going to be blunt because it's the only way I know how to be because I hate awkward situations."

"Well that's good. Awkward is just dreadful."

"Well I'm glad you don't see the blush on my cheeks."

"What is it?" I asked.

"I-well fuck its awkward anyways."

"What?"

"I want my wolf to take over and I want you to take me." She said.

"You're right."

"What?"

"That is awkward." I said.

"I'm sorry." She looked at the ground.

"Don't be." I said and looked at my feet. "Cause my beast wants the same thing."

Before I realized what I was doing I had her pinned against the wall. My teeth were in her shoulder and her legs were wrapped around my waist. I let out soft growls as she moved herself up and down me, torturing me. My hands were on her ass steadying her as she used her legs to maneuver me inside her. She growled herself as she pushed herself down until I was completely inside the warmth of her. It was like a heavenly vice around my cock. She moved her belly in a dance but the movement was all for me. She tightened around me and I couldn't take any more. I thrusted in as hard and fast as I could. Her claws dug into my back and the pain brought me to the edge. I pulled out of her and put her on her hands and knees before I mounted her from behind. I reached forward and grabbed one of her breasts as the other hand stayed on her hip with me pounding into her. Her back arched as she almost howled as she tightened more around me. I pulled out and turned her over to face me before I entered her again. I put a leg on my shoulder and the other was on my hip. This brought screams from her. It made me want more. She clawed at the pavement leaving marks behind. I felt the familiar tingling sensation and my balls draw up as I came.

I collapsed beside her, catching my breath as her whole body shook. She smiled and closed her eyes.

"Oh my god." She said. "I'm gonna be sore later."

"Did I hurt you?" I asked and raised my head up to look at her.

"Oh no, don't worry about that. It's a good pain. A very good pain."

"I'm glad I could please you." I said with my own smile.

"What the hell am I going to tell Derek?" She asked.

"Don't." I replied.

"You don't understand. He proposed yesterday." She said and sat up.

"I see." I answered, my heart aching a little. What the hell was wrong with me? My beast showed me. He wanted her and he showed me ripping out the male's throat. I shook that image out of my head and made the transformation back. It would quiet the beast for the moment.

She followed my lead and transformed back as well. "What the hell did we just do?" She asked.

"I think it was called sex." I said sarcastically.

"I know that, but now I can think. Crap, now I can think." She said and got up and went to her clothes. She dressed quietly and didn't face me. I got the whiff of tears again.

"I'm sorry." I said.

"Don't be." She answered and sniffed.

I heard something above the ground and paused. "Get back here."

"If you think you're getting a round two you've got-." I grabbed her from behind and put my hand over her mouth. She fought me for a second and then heard it. She went very still. The cellar door jiggled.

"It's locked from the inside." A man's voice said.

"It was sealed years ago. There is a natural spring under there and it flooded." It was another man's voice.

I heard Jade's heartbeat race. She knew the man.

"And how do you know that?" the man asked.

"Because the sheriff and I sealed it a couple years back when a boy drowned in it." The other man said.

"All right. Pack up. They aren't here." The man said.

"But sir, the informer said that there were four of them here. Two females and two males."
