She wanted to blame Sherrie, and a part of her could. But even though the Alpha's daughter played a cruel trick, which ended in their banishment, it did not change the fact that her son hated what he was.
"Momma, do you like living here? Maybe we need to move on." Ja'Mal stated. It wasn't what he said that garnered his mother's attention, but the underlying tone. He was avoiding something and running was his means of escape. However, Betty knew he could not always run, and as alpha he had to learn to fight.
"Son, what has happened?" she asked.
"Nothing Momma. I picked up dinner. That's all." He answered.
"Ja'Mal, you are lycan. You are a good man. What happed in our old pack was not your fault. Sherrie lied to you and took advantage of your youth. She knew her father would never approve of-" Ja'Mal interrupted.
"Momma, stop. I don't want to think about them. Because of my stupidity we lost everything. I thought was defending my mate, when she was just making a fool of me. I won't let another woman trick me again." He exhaled. "They could have let you stay. They didn't have to force you to leave too. Maybe I should have challenged the Alpha. He would have killed me, but at least you would be at home."
Ja"Mal looked out across the desert plains, "Look at me, I'm nothing. No woman in her right mind would want someone like me. I don't understand how we ended up here. There has to be others like us, dark weres. But I've only seen our lighter counter parts. Momma, I want to meet someone like me, like us. Maybe then we'll fit.
Here in this place, there are so few dark people. I've seen some, but they shy away from us. The others watch me as if they expect me to go crazy on them. And now these Indians, the Old Man, no one has said a thing, but that guy, Lionel knows something." Ja'Mal exhaled. He shook as he recalled the level of animosity the indian held for him. It did not get past him at the possessive way the other man looked at the girl. One girl cost him his home. This one he feared could cost him his life.
"Momma, I want to go someplace else. I want to find a place where we fit and I especially want to be gone when the Old man is found." He closed his eyes and the blonde haired blue eyed pixie filled his brain. His wolf grumbled, and Betty knew. Her baby had found his true mate. But he was going to deny her. If she couldn't convince him to stay, they would leave.
Betty was no fool. She was worried about the body buried in the desert, and she prayed that when he was found, no one could connect him to them. It had been months since the incident and no one even mentioned the man. It was obvious that the man was not well liked, so maybe just maybe, no one would question.
She liked it here. Ja'Mal was right. There were few people of color, but the ones she met accepted her. They were a close knit community of a few hundred people. They worked hard and took great pride in the fact that they were self-sufficient. If a need arose they took care of it within their community. No one depended on government aid. They took care if their own. Betty was often asked to join them for social gatherings and she would often refuse. Knowing her son didn't like crowds, she didn't want to add pressure to him. But maybe she was wrong. He needed to meet others that looked like him. He needed to grow to understand that he was not alone in this world.
Being lycan, they could not expose their total nature, but for once they could be around people like them. They finished their meal in silence and Betty needed to run. "Son, I'm going out for a while. I'll be back," she explained,
"Momma, be careful. Call me if you need me, OK?" he whispered. He too was going out. For some reason he needed to go back to the diner. It was pointless arguing with his wolf. The wolf found his mate and would not be denied.
Shifting into a tall dark wolf, Ja'Mal raced across the plains into the small town. Several wolves scented him and were alerted, but Ja'Mal trudged on. As soon as he was in sight if the diner he hid in the shadows and watched her. Two Indians walked her to her car and he watched as she drove away. Ja'Mal chased the car until she reached the winding road and sped away, He sat staring at the dust trails she left behind.
Meanwhile, Betty too, was out enjoying a night run. So deeply engrossed was she that she failed to notice that she was being followed by two males. Soon, she realized shed gone farther than she intended, when she turned to go back. She ran straight into the frame of a gorgeous red wolf that towered over her., He and his companion didn't seem too happy to find a lone female in their territory.
Ja'Mal, help me! she sent frantically before either male shifted and spoke.
Betty shifted form as well and had to admit the two, males were extremely good looking and well built. The men took in her form. Admiring her caramel skin, dark eyes, firm breast, and smooth skin, both males were rendered speechless for a moment. She was a true vision. Clearing his throat the tall red headed man spoke, "Come with us. Our Leader needs to meet you." Next to him his companion, a smaller but equally imposing male stood. He said nothing, just stared. Betty looked at him and shivered. Then she complied and followed the two male weres. There was no point in resisting. As she walked with the males, she heard her son and knew he was on the way.
Alerted instantly, Ja'Mal answered. Momma, I'm on my way. The tall dark wolf took off across the desert.
