But I was pleased that some sort of Legion of Honour would exist. For many officers and soldiers, that bit of ribbon might be the only sign they have of the esteem they deserve.

"Maybe Tudino should be first." I suggested. "Votuda certainly deserves one. Langoret and Neslann, too. And Tallia should get one, while we're at it."

Kanitz held up her hands. "The Queen is taking your suggestion - that doesn't mean that you get to compile the list." She was laughing as she said it.

The question, though, was a little more difficult.

"As for the lands the Queen wants to grant you - what would say to taking over Aneli's estate?"

- "No." I knew right away that that was a terrible idea.

- "Why not?" said Kanitz. "Wouldn't you prefer to have control of them, rather than someone else? A stranger?"

- "No. It would hurt her beyond measure. I understand that she has to pay the price for her choices - but for me to be sitting ... no. Just no."

"She's going to suffer enough as it is."

Kanitz nodded, slowly. "You're right."

She talked to me about a few other options. I had no objections to taking land from General Brune or Countess Marbaud. But I wanted nothing of Iloni's.

- "That can be arranged." said the Queen's Chancellor.

"On a different note - can you stay the night?"

I'd been wondering if she would extend that invitation - and part of me had been dreading it.

Isa had told me, in no uncertain terms, that if Kanitz offered, I had to accept.

- "How do you think she'll feel if you say 'No'?"

Still, I hesitated.

- "I think ... I have to apologize to you, first." I said.

- "For ...?" This was not quite the response Kanitz had been expecting.

- "I was angry. When I realized why you'd really assigned Oshide and Yehla to me. And then Ishana and the others."

Kanitz sat down beside me.

- "I see." she said.

- "I was angry at Koroba." I continued. "She would've been the one to kill me, had it become necessary. Isn't that right?"

- "You're angry because I didn't trust you." said Kanitz. She looked me right in the eye. "How could I?"

"I don't trust anyone. I can't."

"You were an unknown quantity, from a place that doesn't exist. I suspected that you could do great things for the Queen - but I couldn't afford to be wrong."

- "And you told me not to trust you, early on. You were being more than fair with me, by your standards. I know that. But ..."

She reached out, slowly, to touch my cheek.

- "Poor Cook. You really don't belong here." she said.

"You're a Westron, now, for better or worse. It doesn't matter where you came from, or why you ended up here. But you'll never understand us completely."

"I never meant to hurt you ..."

Poor Kanitz. She didn't want to hurt my feelings. Yet she could've ordered my murder - my execution, really - and then gone back to work the next day.

- "I'm not angry anymore." I said. That was only 75% true. "I understand that you were protecting the Queen."

- "Does that mean that you will stay the night - or that you won't?"

She was wearing the same form-fitting sheath dress that she'd had on so many times before when she asked me to stay. It suited her so well. Her nipples were erect, and clearly visible. But it was the expression on her face that decided me.

- "I am at your service, Chancellor."

She led me upstairs, and opened a bottle of wine. We didn't say much. There was no seduction, really. But Wenzla tantalized me by tying back her luxurious, curly hair, and then putting on a bandanna to hold that wonderful hair back from her lovely face.

Kanitz was easily the most beautiful woman I'd ever been with. Her face was exotic, her features alluring. She had flawless skin. Her breasts were ... intoxicating, and her nipples commanded attention.

She had the body of a goddess, and the imagination of a succubus.

She wasn't satisfied with one coupling. We tried out multiple positions, and she did her best to exhaust me completely.

It was a sexual marathon, a contest of endurance, and imagination.

It was also the last time I had sex with Wenzla, Countess Kanitz, the Queen's Chancellor.

***

The Queen convened a new Council of the Blue Chamber.

Many of its members were horrified that three former Councillors - Iloni, Brune, and Countess Marbaud - had been involved in another conspiracy against the Crown, after sitting in judgment on Vis and her accomplices after the wedding plot.

The mood in the capital was dark. People were angry. With the uncertainty of the war against Crolia still hanging over our heads, they were in no mood to forgive self-seeking nobles who used murder to advance their aims.

Langoret, Tudino and Berandot were on the Council. I was not.

Countess Iloni's estate, and all of her property, was confiscated.

Aneli had to give up her title and her property. She was sentenced to be imprisoned - house arrest, as Vis had been.

Countess Marbaud, likewise, lost her title and her lands. She too was imprisoned - but she was allowed to keep her cushion, if ever she was in the presence of the Queen.

General Brune was stripped of her rank, and her property. As a Commanding Officer in wartime, her participation in the plot was clearly nothing short of the highest treason. She was beheaded in the public square.

Two other soldiers, of noble rank, were executed along with Brune.

Vis was no longer a General. Nor was she a noble. Along with 11 common soldiers from Brune's regiment, she was publicly flogged, and then hanged.

I think at this point, after 4 years of separation from his tale, I finally understand how well you crafted the political side of this and how can it's had to walk such a fine line. Part of me is still really shocked that Oshide might have killed him had he stepped out of line...but I understand the idea; just as I understand the same idea that Kenitz might have asked Koroba to murder Cook if he stepped out of line. The part where I see you changed it a little bit though was with Koroba, because while I knew she was a fierce little wench and there was no doubt that she really was basically head over heels for Cook. I love the fact that when she got her impish smile back too.

What I'm really sad to read about is that the last two chapters people really bitched about Cook having multiple lovers and just generally being a pain. While I can understand them to a point, you have always been fair as an author and you've never pulled your punches (you're a lot like Kanitz). In fact, you're one of the few guys that I can read stuff from that would normally be out of my comfort zone? However, the way you put it, you sanitize it to where it's understandable. So I am going to step out and point blank say the people that just wanted to ridicule the story because they thought Cook was just screwing anything that moved they were out of line, and I'm glad you dealt with them. I think that's the thing that this piece of writing illustrates about you--and that's that you're open-minded enough to accept multiple points of view--but you're willing to maintain your story. It takes just as much courage to have an open enough mind be able to accept input, but to also know when to stay true to your story. I'll even admit that sometimes I've had disagreements with some of the stuff you've done, but I may have never expressed them... but nearly always I've been nearly 100% satisfied with how you resolved things, which is the best testament to your story writing, because even though there are some things that you choose to end on that won't please everybody, you generally have satisfying enough endings that actually will please most people.

I believe what some people have railed against in some of the comments is basically the idea of polyamory, which isn't too popular idea anyway. As for me, that's not something I could ever do. However, the biggest historical example we have of this would have been King Solomon: while it kind of worked for him because he was able to maintain his focus on what mattered and what he should have, it largely ended up removing him from his proper focus-- and that's the real danger of it--and although he was able to redeem himself at the end of his life, he did manage to inflict a great deal of suffering on both himself and the people he ruled over for the time that he went off the rails. This is why I say that I don't believe you've ever tried to take advantage of asking a reader to suspend too much disbelief with what you write, because usually you ground it well enough in what you're trying to say and what you're trying to get across that it doesn't seem too far fetched. That's what I appreciate most about you, is that you keep it as real as you can, while you're still trying to successfully craft the fictional element into the type of story you would like to write about. This is why I consider you one of the best authors at the site, because you don't try to necessarily foist upon the readers only your vision of what you think should be done, and you actually have a pretty good way of anticipating most people's objections and accounting for most people's general tastes in many ways. So yeah, I really want to express my appreciation, as I can now look back at the story and say most definitely that while your quality has remained consistent over the years, you've expanded your range and versatility which will only benefit you dash dash but especially us as readers. Keep steaming ahead man!

Cook now comes across as such a simp. No reaction to being a cuckold several times over. Culture differences blah blah he is still Terran. There was no struggling with it or coming to terms with it. He just instantly accepts it with Themis and then again with Talia. Now he is made for like 1/2 a day about being very personally betrayed by his closest confidants and blah blah 1 paragraph later HE GOES BACK TO APOLOGIZE? Come on dude. Have some freaking self respect. The battle chapters are excellent and carry the story but the relationships have jumped the shark several times over.

More great work

I'm loving this series - that should be obvious as I'm here reading and commenting on the 27th chapter!

Don't pay much attention to the negative (and anonymous) comments, your characters, plot and writing have kept me coming back for more.

Thanks
