They found Ada and William, in each other's arms, in the bed in the big bedroom on the second floor of Brook House. The doctor said they had died peacefully in their sleep, slowly suffocated by a leak in the chimney into that room of carbon monoxide from the coal fire in the stove downstairs.
Later that week Beth and John and Daniel and Jess made one more trip up to the snowy glen half way between Brook House and Hagen's mill to release the ashes of Ada and William into the waters of the upper Wolf Creek stream.
