Some words from HansTrimble:

One of the best experiments I've toyed with was the story titled 'One More Notch on the Bedpost', posted in early December 2014. I've noticed that popular stories always follow a common theme. Cheating wives always have to be tossed out, humiliated, and reduced to poverty. Detectives always have to be brilliant, powerful, and great humanitarians. Doctors must always be saintly and omniscient. The hero has to stand six foot three and be hung like a horse. And so on--only cookie cutter replicas need apply. So I decided to upset these preconceived formulas and see what would happen.

The hero is a police lieutenant who is about as smart as a box of rocks. His wife is an airhead who is loyal to her husband while he's in the same room with her. The most admirable character is a woman psychologist, who doesn't get to stand for much because her lines are reduced to bare functional necessities, although I did take pity and let her break down and dissolve in tears once, just because I felt sorry for her.

Maybe the story let everybody vent their frustrations caused by the holiday shopping season. For whatever reason, everybody hated the story but it drew readers at a rate that amazed me. Before Christmas, it had over 26,000 reads! That's an almost unbelievable number! I don't think I could get that many if I posted the New Testament!

I guess it's time to go back to stereotypes. But my experiment was a success. It showed me that people who read stories on a website based on fantasies, want to read about people who are better than the ones they encounter every day. We have to put up with human frailty everywhere, all the while, so it's not much fun to read about it in our free time.

I'm an engineer, widowed, retired from the aircraft industry and loving every minute of my retirement! It's great being able to do what I want, when I want, the way I want.

I've found it very relaxing to sit at the keyboard at night, when everything is quiet, and write whatever comes to mind. I'd like to get better at it, so your specific, constructive criticism will be appreciated.

I understand that I can't please everybody, and I gave up trying a long time ago. If you simply don't like my writing, it's more likely my fault than yours, so I suggest that your time might better be spent reading somebody else's stories.
