Born and raised in that most beautiful and most tragic of all continents, where a single country can contain more cultural treasures than some continents, where more blood has been spilled in an incessant succession of pointless wars than has been anywhere else, and the legacy of which is shaping the world to this very day, I'm very much European, having moved from one end of this continent to another. This is the setting where my stories take place: Europe, with its bewildering collection of languages, cultural differences, and occasionally outright bizarre customs. It makes for an endless variety of scenery and situations. Imagine this: in the morning you're in London, then you catch a high speed train that whisks you across southern England, underneath the Channel and through northern France, and in just over two hours you're in Paris, where you would have had plenty of time to catch lunch, if it weren't for the fact that you got run over because you forgot that cars drive on the other side of the road. The British helpfully paint the pavements to tell in what direction you should look; the French, regretfully, do not. I love Europe. There's nothing elsewhere in the world that you won't find here, except perhaps large herds of wild kangaroos. Our monuments range from Gothic cathedrals to extermination camps. We shaped the world of today, we shaped who you are, and I would like to apologise for that on behalf of the entire continent. My stories are written in UK English, and contain a fair bit of British colloquialisms. I go easy on metric measurements; as a result, my characters will never be described in terms of absolute lengths or weights. Use your imagination instead; it's there for a reason. |
