She was a sweet little one
Or so they told her
Gentle and always eager to please
But she could play and run wild
With the others when allowed

His firm, soothing touch
Kept her from getting too rebellious
She was only half broke
Still a little too frisky for some
When He took over her care

He won her trust
With His calmness
He won her heart
With His gentleness
Then He began training her

Thoroughbred or hack
Depending on whom you spoke with
Different stories emerged
But He saw deep beneath the scars
Her beauty and loving spirit

He tended her with a diligence
Few had ever shown before
She in turn strove to please
By learning and growing in skill
The trust binding them, remarkable

He taught her to behave, to trust
Whispered in her ear
One-day there will be one
Who will see your worth
Claim you for His own

Only her trust in Him
Allowed her to accept His words
Though she still trembled a bit with fear
So many before had done naught
But cause her pain and heartache

Sensing her fear and uncertainty
He reassured her
He would only let one worthy of her
Claim her and take her away
And only when she was ready

Then one day another came
She spent a while in His care
Learning His touch and feel
He reminded her of the Other
And she trusted Him as well

Back and forth between the two
Learning and playing
Both, similar yet unique
Took her down different paths
She took great pleasure in pleasing

Soon the day came
When her first told her
The time has come dear
Time for you to move on
Time for another to claim you

She trembled and shook
Wanting badly to run back to the wild
But the Other was there
His touch gentle and soothing
Letting her know He had her

His patient touch calmed her
His soft voice whispered reassurances
His gentle hands held her steady
His firm tone eased her fears
His strength anchored her

While she spun and fought
To understand and accept
He stayed by her side
Holding her gently yet firmly
He understood, though she did not

He knew she was confused
And wanted to fly away
But knew her flight
Would do more harm
For she was not meant to be alone

Beneath His hand she calmed
She stopped fighting and listened
Heard the tone she knew so well
Felt the touch she longed to feel
Gave her heart to Him who claimed her
