big dipper of one own's mind

I could not know if this poet imagined the ambiguity which I found in this poem. While the flash lights may be pointing to the stars installation in the sky, a mirroring 'constellation' of dotted lights might have occurred to the observing poet right here upon earth as the connecting image of all those lights emanating from the kids' flash lights...
