Waiting in Line

I thought of you today,
held your name in my pocket
tucked in my fingers
against the warmth of my palm.

I felt the shape.
The curl of my hand
holding you close,
embraced,
slowly unfurled.

Such sweetness in knowing you,
tenderness in the way my thumb tucks in,
vulnerability in the stretch of fingers downward,
the opening of the wrist.

I’m too shy to bring my hand to my heart
where it should be.
It would be too much
to share you with strangers.

I wasn't sure

about this till the last two lines,

and that brought it all into focus.

shy, tender, a little sad.

a wonderful little poem packed with all the longing of a shy woman.

Thank you
