A simple wire before me,
Causes little resistance to flee.
The wire may be walked around,
Gone over or under, easily
Perhaps the wire represents money,
Something easy to overcome.
Yet if another wire is added,
Two becomes their sum.
Easily pushing them both aside,
I could climb from their grasp.
But what if another wire is added?
Now three, I have to pass.
The first two wires are upright.
The third crosses both of those.
And suddenly a fourth appears,
Joining to form a tiny square hole.
Each of the wires represents items,
Things that many may not see.
But if you step away and look,
You realize the cage that surrounds me.
The first wire is my children.
The second is money to survive.
The third is overcoming hatred.
The fourth is worry for our lives.
Still more wires are added,
Each stands for something new.
Perhaps fear of retribution,
Or fear of what you will do.
In a world wrought with judgment
Am I quitter for leaving the cage?
Or am I a survivor,
Who will see a better day?
Peering through the cage,
I see the world outside.
And wonder if I’m strong enough,
To visit the other side.
