I am like the rose
Before it opens
Beauty hidden beneath
That no one can yet see.

I've thorns to protect me
I've grown them
Through my pain and desperation
It's my only defense.

At times I'm in full bloom
Cherished and adored
But all too soon
Put in a vase or cast aside.

My petals wither
From lack of love
Plucked from the ground
To be what someone wanted.

I yearn to be loved
As I once was
When I was in the garden
Growing beautiful and free.
