In the dawn's dismal light
the sighing candle glows
and, shedding warm, wax tears,
mourns the too-swift passing
of one more sleep-starved night.
Outside a dark mist clears
as my darling stirs and goes,
leaving only pillow-print
where once his head had laid,
on these sheets the sweated scent
of our bodies dealing
in lust's complicit trade,
and in my heart this gift of fears
that only love bestows.

Evocative

My ex was military and many was the "dawn's dismal light" that left my heart fearful... I cry reading this remembering those nights and mornings. Wonderful, evocative and memorable..... Thanks!

Lust and Love

you give them sapphic godhood but you didn't follow thru with capitalization. I didn't give you a fiver because of some stale images, but your other honeyed bread poem is fantastic, so I'll comment on that one here instead of over there.

From the first line down to "pillow-print" is just wonderful. You do write some lovely poetry.
