"We both have suffered," Thomas said
As Martha dragged her lungs further.

"So very much, Dear," the nicotine rasp
Rang out. She rested near some precious stone

Carved for Pvt. Gerald F. Adams
KIA where Thomas was wounded

When boys became men and later again
In Levittown maternity wards.

"Our Jonathan, Dear, was a darling child
With his cowboy hat or stripe painted face.

Not once did I wonder what he might be
As paratroop toy men fell from trees"
Said dear Martha leaving Gerald's stone

For another long day at the beach
That lengthens again by any measure
Her longest days since those short days of peace.
