The respirator counts out with each 'pause-hiss' 'pause-hiss'
such a loud noise to create such a gentle act
I sit and stare at the monitor watching the little lights blinking
watching each line as it's dragged across the screen
and take comfort that for now at least all is well
as I watch I wonder what he's thinking
what dreams are playing out behind his eyes
is he flying, a Botticelli cherub unfettered and free
not bound by the small expanse of wire connecting him to this plane
does he feel the sunlight and breeze on his skin as he soars over
an ephemeral landscape, his wings beating in time
with each 'pause', with each hiss
or is he instead a water sprite gliding thru the eternal deep
safe and comfortable in the first element all living creatures know
no up or down just gliding
just gliding free
'pause-hiss'
'pause-hiss'
'pause-hiss'
