Windy came early
Wendy stayed late
blowing through the trees
like a long-ago date,
We, indeed, were lovers
friends, office-workers
used to go for fries
and double cheese burgers,

That was way-back-when
distant speck of time
not of consequence
in this futile rhyme,
But, she's still on my mind
signs along the road
love the way she wiggled
how her gold hair flowed,

Worked in the same building
went for lunch at times
apartment down the street
Patchouli and wind chimes,
She'd make a veggie sandwich
sometimes we'd share a beer
then roll around naked
watching in the mirror,

But, with the snows of winter
just as we got snug
a job in West Africa
I got the travel bug,
I wrote her several letters
but got no reply
wondering how she was
watched the distant sky,

Many months later
springtime in the city
my skin tropic brown
money in my kitty,
Knocked on her door
neighbor shrugged his shoulder
said she left last winter
Berkeley, maybe Boulder,

Apartment door was open
the place not yet rented
familiar sensual whiff
Patchouli oil scented,
Mattress on the floor
mirror tiles on the wall
where I'd watch her naked laughter
or was I ever here at all...
