He Promised To Come Home. He Lied To Me.

We kissed and hugged, he promised to come home,
Bodies wrapped tight in a final embrace,
Tears ran down, it was such a surreal dream,
Why must he go, can't someone take his place?

We kissed, as if no one else existed,
Hearts so broken, yet sadly still entwined,
This pain can't be explained to those others,
Any attempt couldn't process their minds.

His uniform impressive, so pristine,
He was my man, fate destined he would be,
Love started as sweethearts in just our teens,
Then marriage, baby, before the army.

When called, he responded with allegiance,
Training molded him and readied his brain,
After basic, his service requested,
To Iraq by a military plane.

Leave our reprieve from pained reality,
There's never enough time to say goodbye,
Each day counted closer to his leaving,
The terror increased with thoughts he would die.

We walked towards the gate with my hand in his,
My smile, the sight he'd see boarding his plane,
Stopping the tears, an impossible feat,
With inner strength, my smile finally came.

I never believed this was our goodbye?
Too horrible a possibility.
Just five months, his tour ended abruptly,
Notification brought me agony.

He promised to come home, how dare he lie?
I love him, I miss him, I want to die.
Take this my pain and bring him back to me.
The death of him hurts me too much to cry.

He'd want me to move on to a new life,
With time, tears, and prayers it's hopeful to try,
Empty, my life is numb bearing his loss,
I'll need much help to heal and to survive.

With memories of my lover and husband,
Brings a floodgate for him that I adore,
My saving grace is our baby, Robert,
His happy smile and eyes makes my heart soar.

He'll grow up to be proud of our hero,
A promise I made to his loving Dad,
Our baby will grow strong with good character,
That tribute would have made my husband glad.

Healing comes slow, but in steady stages,
My normal life continues to progress,
Mother and son, we're learning together,
First in life and now in death, we've been blessed.

This is the first time . . .

that I have read any of your poetry. This one caught my eye, or rather, the title did. VERY GOOD! You have so much talent for writing, it just amazes me! Miss seeing your stories - and yes I know that you now only submit contest ones. I saw another new poem submittal and am going to read it also.
