I am still at my task,
footsore but dauntless.
Prey gambols away.
Steadfast hunter follows

Wry grin, huffing resignation,
chase continues no hesitation.
Except:
for a drink or two, a cheery fire
ere I retire to dream of you.

Predawn:
Cold, dark, shivering
Pack camp and move quickly
Fair game sleeps in the sullen dawning.

Very nice -

Lots of posibilities, with facets I may well want to nick some day...

The cheery fire would be a dwindling campfire for me, I suppose.

I like this because it's concise but still has a nice snap to it. Agree with Erectus about the "cheery fire" and the "ere."
