A square of grey and green. Somewhat aslant,
the main road through it: cars, the coloured coats
of groups of cyclists homing. In the sky

a single crow comes slowly wheeling by
across the clouds. Although the day is dark
most distant windows are still squares of black

and not a lantern shows to light the flow
of local traffic through the afternoon,
the line of people on their way from work,

plain peace and quiet. Here, inside, you hear
the ticking of the green infusion pump
to emphasize the silence and the loss

of flesh from bones. The peaceful view escapes
those tired bewildered eyes: they open wide
to close at once, dull, out of reach, alone.
