she had never heard his voice
and yet it called to her
it called her from the depths
it spoke:
come woman-slave
take my hand

it charged her
to be her best woman
then fell silent
leaving her with an aching

the ecstasy of being brought
to the edge
of reality
only to be pushed over
the precipice
with nary a thing to grasp

falling
calling
asking
why take his slave's heart
her being
and then forsake her
