This is where the world ends, this
steep, brusque decline, this fall
from rock to water where the waves
tear into the old land. You hear
the polished pebbles gnash their teeth
each onslaught as the water's wrath
comes quite gratuitous, one blow
and the the next one. Do not come
too close - this height makes giddy; do
not watch the seething water play
its brutal games. Step back, for this
is where the stars end, where your dreams
grow pointless, dwarfed and flat - undone
by all the overwhelming grey
of rough sky and the shore's dismay.
