As I sit in darkness, I get an inkling,
of a little light, that's twinkling.

Flickering, in the shady gloom,
it dances near, and lights my room.

On fragile wings, she flits and bobs,
while I weep, with stifled sobs.

Through tear filled eyes, I strain to see,
this little fairy, dance for me.

Kneeling in my hellish prison,
I bow before this heavenly vision.

Then I see; her little wings are tattered,
her hair is singed, her gown blood spattered.

I forgot myself then; her pain, was all that mattered.
I cried, over the little form thus battered.

What hellish hands have caused this plight,
to this little waif, who, made my darkness light?

On my gentle, outstretched hand, she did alight.
I'll shelter her, throughout the night.

And if I can but make her smile,
maybe she might stay awhile.

I would keep her from all harm;
resting, on my big strong arm.

Maybe I can sleep tonight;
with this firefly for light.

No longer weeping, in the gloom;
with her lighting up my room.

So I ask this with a smile;
"Please little firefly; stay awhile?"
