The coffee grains formed
imitation lava when it landed
in the sink after the French press
slipped out of my hands.

What hissed was not the hot
liquid but my father’s words
repeating over and over, telling
me I’d let one more thing slip

into the irretrievable undertow,
like his love, I used to think
