Tonight at dinner
I saw in a booth across the
well lit diner
you -- in the future.
You were with friends
a group of old men
some balding
(you weren't)
some chubby
(you were)
just laughing
having a beer
I could not take my eyes off
future you
(though the man himself did not notice)
You looked so
Happy
I could see future you
going home to the love of your life
and your little nest of cherub faced children
It was in his (your?) smile
in his eyes
it said "I am in love and my love
is mine
and we are happy
the future is ours"
He looked so much like you
so much
plus the happy
too much
I couldn't stop from glancing at him
until I left
like I was trying to imprint you
on my brain
even though it wasn't you
but it was
